FinTech Opens a New Chapter for the School (21 May)

carried an interview with Prof KC Chan, Prof Hui Kai Lung and Prof Allen Huang, from across three different academic departments, featuring their views on the potential of FinTech and its new possibilities for students. They also explained the important roles of academic research in FinTech development, citing blockchain applications as an example, and introduced a plan to introduce an MSc in FinTech Program. Prof Chan also called for more resources from the Government to promote innovation and technology.

The Chinese version of both BBC and Dow Jones cited comments by Prof Albert Park, Department of Economics and Director of Institute of Emerging Market Studies, on the role of Vice Premier Liu He in the Sino-US trade war and the impact of a trade war on the manufacturing of vehicles.

Technology Talent Admission Scheme (20 May)

Cable TV talk show discussed the “Technology Talent Admission Scheme” recently launched by the government for eligible technology companies and institutes, in which Prof Hui Kai Lung, Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management, joined other guest speakers to comment on the policy.

Financial Times zoomed in on the next generation of family businesses and their successors, amid the retirement of tycoon Li Ka-shing. Prof Roger Kong, Director of the Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies, was quoted as saying that a key characteristic of ethnic Chinese family businesses that survive more than a century is their ability to “prune ownership” to head off disputes.

Sino-US Trade War and Hong Kong People’s Pragmatic Traditions (11 May)

HKEJ, HKET, Sky Post and Headline carried articles by Emeritus Prof Francis Lui, Department of Economics, on the Sino-US trade war and his views on comparing the strengths of China and other countries. He also wrote about the pragmatic traditions of Hong Kong people.
