HKUST Launches Center for Technology and Business Ecosystem

Various media reported that School has launched the Center for Technology and Business Ecosystem to help guide businesses through the technological shifts. It will focus its research on how emerging technologies, such as AI and robotics, are reshaping business ecosystems and strategies. Acting Dean Prof. HUI Kai-Lung said the Center has been finalizing partnership agreements with a couple of HK and mainland firms to take part in a study. The establishment of the center was made possible through a donation from Dr. HU Yu, Co-founder of iFLYTEK.

School Experts Share Insights on Stablecoins-related Developments

The Stablecoins Ordinance will come into effect on August 1. In an HK Economic Journal report series about investors’ growing interest in stablecoins, Acting Dean Prof. HUI Kai-Lung mentioned that as the stablecoin market in HK is in its infancy with a relatively small market size, investors should be cautious of hype surrounding related stocks. Prof. Hui said the main regulatory concern with cryptocurrencies is the risk of money laundering, as public transaction chains are hard to monitor, whereas the banking system can quickly block suspicious transactions through intermediaries. Various media reported that HKUST Institute for Financial Research (IFR), Crypto-Fintech Lab, and OKG Research co-hosted a seminar on stablecoins featuring the launch of the "Web3 Payment Research Report". In his opening remarks, IFR Asst. In an SCMP article highlighting HK as a "first mover" in stablecoins legislation, IFR Asst. Director Dr. Tang Bo stated that the city’s near-simultaneous legislative push with the US underscored the intensifying East-West contest over financial influence in the digital era.
