carried prominent coverage featuring Associate Prof of Business Education Paul FORSTER, who is also the winner of Interdisciplinary Programs Office (IPO) Teaching Excellence Award 2019. He shared his life story including some setbacks, and how he coped with them and depression over the years. He encouraged others to face with challenging times in a positive way. TVB program “Future Scope” (看出個未來) looked into the latest digital currency development for transaction. Associate Dean (Research) and Chair Prof HUI Kai-Lung, Department of ISOM, talked about the latest trends and explained the benefits of using cryptocurrency and e-wallet for payment and inter-bank clearance, among others.

Conflict between Social Values and Personal Rights (July 30)
Chair Prof. HUI Kai Lung wrote in HK Economic Times on how the COVID-19 has revealed conflicts between personal rights and social values, with the growing use of information technology. Owing to issues such as cybersecurity and data privacy when more people working from home during the pandemic, he said that the society needs to strike a reasonable balance between public and private interest.

Short Selling on Investment (July 30)
Associate Dean and MBA Program Director Prof CHEN Tai Yuan, Department of Accounting, shared his views in Sina Education on how investment firms practice short selling on companies. He highlighted that the most important task of stock investment is to identify "bombs" and to make use of the accounting and financial statements for "minesweeping".

Most Competitive Programs in JUPAS (July 28)Local dailies, including ODN, Topick, HK Economic Times, Apple Daily reported the JUPAS applicants’ program choices upon submission deadline. The top three competitive programs at HKUST this year were International Research Enrichment Program, BSc in Mathematics and Economics, and BBA in Finance.

Greater Bay Area and Hong Kong Future (July 28)
Emeritus Prof. Francis LUI, Department of Economics, wrote in Speakout on the education system of HK. He suggested the society and government to prioritize the establishment of communication channels with the Greater Bay Area.

HK First AI-Centric MBA Elective (July 27)
Recruit featured the first AI elective course co-introduced earlier by the Business School and the AI Business School of Microsoft HK in an article. Meanwhile, HKUST was cited as one of the local universities which offers massive open online courses (MOOC).

China Will not Succumb Against US Suppression (July 27)
In an Ta Kung Pao article comparing US actions against China and the country’s strategy against Japan in the 80s, Prof Edwin LAI, Department of Economics, said that China is less dependent on the US than that of Japan 30 years ago, which makes China less likely to succumb to the US like Japan in the past.

Several media portals, including Commercial Radio, The Standard, RTHK, Metro Radio, ODN, Headline Daily, cited comments by Emeritus Prof Francis LUI. He said that HK’s economy will be under considerable impact as the US escalates its confrontation with China.

Opportunities Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic (July 24)
Adjunct Prof Erwin HUANG, Department of ISOM, wrote in HK Economic Times to share his views on the opportunities brought forward by the COVID-19 pandemic. Separately, he wrote another article in HK Economic Journal saying that Hong Kong must regularly conduct the COVID-19 pool testing to ease the pressure of the medical system.

Research on Production and Operations Management (July 23)
UCLA Anderson Review carried an article with a headline of “Do bigger companies win even when they lose out on corrupt deals?”, featuring a research paper on Production and Operations Management co-written by Prof CHEN Ying Ju, Department of ISOM. It mentioned that the paper will explore the motivations of large companies in contracting situations marked by bribery.

Wisdom of Family Offices During Pandemic (July 23)
Prof PENG Qian, Director of Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies, shared her insights in HK Economic Times. She talked about how innovative the philanthropy strategy can help the society during the pandemic and the new direction of family businesses.

US Sanctions against HK (July 21 & 22)
Emeritus Prof Francis LUI wrote articles in stnn.cc, Speakout and Ta Kung Pao on the possible sanctions against HK by the US. He pointed out that the only effective measure would be withdrawing HK from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), but it would be very unlikely as the hegemony of the US dollar will also be damaged.

Sina.com and Sina Finance carried articles reporting the winners of the Hong Kong Financial Institutions Awards (HKFIA) 2020. HKFIA is co-hosted by the Center for Investing at the HKUST Business School and S&P Global Market Intelligence in recognition of the outstanding market performance and wealth management of the institutions.

The US President’s Executive Order on Hong Kong Normalization (July 17)
Emeritus Prof Francis LUI wrote articles in several media portals, including HK Economic Times and Headline Daily, on US President Donald TRUMP’s Executive Order on “Hong Kong Normalization”.

Tips to Prepare for the Future (July 17)
Adjunct Prof Erwin HUANG wrote an article in HK Economic Times on how entrepreneurs could prepare for the uncertainty of the future. Separately, he wrote another article in HK Economic Journal to share his vision on the ideas for future learning.

Ripple Effect of Haunted Houses (July 16)
HK Economic Times carried an article by Prof Utpal BHATTACHARYA, Department of Finance, on a study about the spillover effect of haunted flats in HK. He explained how murders, suicides and accidental deaths lower the value of the affected units and nearby houses in Hong Kong and elsewhere.

Delhi Startup Helps Rural India to Become Financially Inclusive (July 16)
Social Story featured a story about an undergraduate student, Naman TEKRIWAL, and his friends who founded a Delhi-based fintech start-up “Rural Invest” to help people residing in rural areas to save for the future by channelizing money into mutual funds through systematic investment plans.

Redefining CSR for the Post COVID-19 Era (July 15)
Harvard Business Review China cited comments by Associate Dean Prof XU Yan on the need to redefine CSR. Prof Xu believes that CSR should go beyond charity, donations, environmental protection, etc and points out that in China, a number of best-managed private companies are showcasing the typical characteristics of a “social enterprise”, thus achieving competitive advantage in the post-epidemic era.

Honorary Doctoral Degrees and Fellowships (July 13)
Guojiribao, Mirage News and Sing Tao reported on a virtual ceremony, in which HKUST awarded the honorary doctoral degrees to Prof Arup K. CHAKRABORTY, Adjunct Prof CHAN Ka-Keung Ceajer, Prof John HARDY, Dr LI Dak-Sum and Prof Kenneth POMERANZ. Meanwhile, the honorary fellowships were awarded to Mr Quinn LAW Yee-Kwan, Mr Michael LEE Tze-Hau, Mr Winston LO Yau-Lai, Mr Kyran SZE and Adjunct Prof Caroline WANG Chia-Ling in recognition of their contributions and achievements to the society.

Value of Fintech Education (July 10)
Associate Prof Theodore CLARK, Department of ISOM, shared his insights in Soar Payments on the importance of Fintech. He explained why education can be instrumental in career growth and why technological skill (e.g., programming) is an asset to any career.

E-learning and Ways to Reboot the Aviation Industry (July 10)
HK Economic Journal carried an article by Adjunct Prof Erwin HUANG on why venture capital investors are interested in entrepreneurial ideas on e-learning and education technology in the wake of the pandemic. Meanwhile, an article in HK Economic Times featured on how a startup specializing in COVID-19 testing pre-flight boarding would flourish when people begin to travel again.

Faculty Gender Balance (July 9)
Times Higher Education carried an article on female representation in Asian academia and said that 30 per cent faculty of the HKUST Business School were women which is the highest proportion among the 20 elite business schools surveyed in the 2020 Gender Balance Scorecard.

Judges’ Appointment System under the National Security Law (July 2 & 9)
Associate Prof Allen HUANG, Department of Accounting, wrote two article in HK Economic Times (1) and HK Economic Times (2) on judges’ appointment system under the newly enacted national security law and how judges’ ideology could affect their judgements.

Uber’s Impact on Public Transit in Korea (July 8)
A research by Prof LEE Dongwon, Department of ISOM, was featured in Dong-A Business Review, one of the top three daily newspapers in Korea. The article summarized a paper on Uber’s impact on public transit in Korea since the car sharing business is a serious issue in the country.

Comments on Government’s Financial Initiatives (July 8)
HK01 interviewed Adjunct Prof KC CHAN, Department of Finance, on his views on government’s financial initiatives. He said the government should take action to rescue Cathay Pacific for the sake of the airline traffic rights.

Comments on the National Security Law (July 4-8)
Emeritus Prof Francis LUI commented in Ta Kung Pao on the National Security Law. Meanwhile, several media portals cited his comments in a roundtable that the US’s decision to revoke HK’s preferential status. He said the move won’t hurt the city’s economy and HK should strengthen its development on innovation and technology.

QS Global Joint EMBA Rankings 2020 released (July 1)
New Straits Times reported on the latest EMBA Rankings 2020 for Joint Programs conducted by QS. Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA Program has fallen one spot to No.2. HKUST said the program was ranked among the world’s best over the years and will continue to pursue excellence and cultivate talent with global vision.

Faculty Appointment to the Commission on Poverty (July 1)
Various media portals, including HK01 and Headline Daily, reported the appointment of Prof LEUNG Siu Fai, Department of Economics, as a non-official member to the Commission on Poverty for a term of two and a half years.
