Intellectual Property considerations are becoming an increasingly important factor in doing research on university campuses. Due to the nature of IP Law principles, fundamental conflicts exist between the desires of university administrations to capitalize on the work of their researchers and traditional academic precepts. IP Law, which includes patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets, has also been significantly challenged by the Internet and modern digital technology, which in turn have presented many new wrinkles in the complications researchers face. The talk will provide a brief tutorial on fundamental Intellectual Property Law with comments on some of the impacts the Internet has had, not the least of which is the internationalization of the issues. When a web page is openly posted, the author, and even Internet Service Provider, may be subjecting themselves to legal systems world-wide. The talk will also provide an opportunity for researchers to pose questions regarding specific issues.
