Professor XU Yan of the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistic, and Operations Management has recently published a joint research report entitled “Innovation for Hong Kong’s Upward Social Mobility” with co-author Calvin YU. The project is sponsored by the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong and managed by the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Center.

The report began by reviewing the phenomenon of “youthquake” – the word of the year 2017 by Oxford Dictionary. Both authors pointed out the objective of developing Hong Kong’s technology and innovation industry should be positioned to provide opportunities for Hong Kong’s young generations and enable upward social mobility.

Referencing the Type I and Type II technology and innovation industries framework proposed by Professor Xu, the report suggested several strategies, including matching funds for universities’ technology transfer, attracting global companies to set up research centers in the Lok Ma Chau Loop, and re-positing the function of the Hong Kong Productivity Council.

The Chinese version and the English version of the report is now available on our website.
