A team of 36 students and alumni from the HKUST EMBA program succeeded and surpassed themselves in the 16th Xuan Zang Road Business School Gobi Trek Challenge held between May 2 and 5. The team was awarded the "Shackleton Cup" for great team spirit throughout the four-day challenge. For the first time, the team also won the “Best Creativity Award” by showcasing their value and team spirit in a short film.
The Gobi Trek Challenge is an annual competition held for Chinese EMBA students from top business schools around the world. Participants trek through 112 km across the Gobi Desert to experience a section of the 17-year-long journey that the Buddhist monk Xuanzang made to India in the 7th century. Despite strict social distancing regulations, the team overcame various obstacles in the past six months and managed to organize four training sessions in different cities ahead of the challenge.

Between April 17 and 18, another signature EMBA alumni event was held in the city of Yancheng in Jiangsu Province. The gathering commenced with a warm welcome and introduction by alumnus Mr CAO Lubao, Mayor of Yancheng City, followed by an insightful sharing on investment opportunities by Mr GAO Shangde, Secretary of Yannan High-tech Zone. Participants then embarked on a cultural walking tour and visited various key locations in the city.
Additionally, the 20th episode of the "Dialogue with Teacher Yuan" series was also held as part of the two-day event on April 17. Ms YUAN Ye, Director of HKUST’s Mainland Office, hosted an insightful dialogue on the latest developments on innovation and entrepreneurship. The dialogue featured several distinguished guests who are also alumni of the HKUST EMBA program. They are Mr TANG Gaoming, Deputy Secretary of the Yannan High-tech Zone Party, Mr ZHANG Wenyu and Mr CAI Yongjun, Members of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Mr CHENG Liang, General Manager of Zhuhai Yunzhou and one of the top 10 quasi-unicorns of HKUST in 2020, Mr MA Ye, Founder of Haike Biotechnology and one of the top 10 finalists of the HKUST Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition.
On April 18, HKUST EMBA alumni joined a signature Marathon event with over 10,000 participants in the morning. This was followed by a city tour in the afternoon as the group visited a new energy vehicle manufacturing base and the Wetland Research Institute to deepen their understanding of Yancheng to conclude a wonderful weekend gathering.
The Program also celebrated the achievement of alumnus Mr LAU Tatchuen for being awarded the Greater China Outstanding Entrepreneur Awards 2021 by Hong Kong Commercial Daily.
