Sustainable and green finance (SGFN) has gained significance in recent years. In Hong Kong, SGFN talents will continue to be in great demand. Therefore, raising awareness and interest among high school students is imperative to sustain the future talent pool for SGFN industries in the city.

Despite these upcoming opportunities, presently, 99% of post-secondary students know little about environmental, social, and governance (ESG) and only 14% of all industry practitioners are well versed in the ESG market.

On February 26, Professor TAM Kar Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School, spoke at a “Sustainable and Green Finance” knowledge enrichment webinar organized by the Hong Kong Economic Journal (HKEJ) and the Education Bureau (EDB). The webinar was specially curated for over 170 high school principals and teachers to learn more about the challenges and opportunities of SGFN talents.

During his presentation, Professor Tam shared his expertise on how teachers can equip students with vital knowledge and skills to fill the talent gap in SGFN industries. He also discussed local and global opportunities for students in the future.

To bridge this broad talent gap, our pioneering BSc in Sustainable and Green Finance (SGFN) Program and “Developing Hong Kong as a Global Green Finance Centre” research project – which has received HK$60 million in funding – will work across several disciplines to enhance Hong Kong’s SGFN talent pool and advance the city’s academic research in the area.
