The global concern of climate change has prompted governments and private sectors worldwide to act toward reducing carbon emissions. Despite efforts made by the Hong Kong government to expand the green and sustainable finance (GSF) market, there remains an urgent issue of talent shortage in the industry.

Based on insights from industry practitioners drawn in interviews and a survey, the HKUST Business School Green Finance Research Group’s study report “The Hong Kong Green and Sustainable Finance Talent Development and Strategy” identifies crucial stakeholders, skill areas, and knowledge progression paths in the up-and-rising GSF market and provides valuable guidance for policymakers, industry practitioners, employers, educators, and job seekers to address the issue.

To help steer Hong Kong’s development into an international green finance hub, developing a skills and competencies framework, such as establishing a professional certification framework for GSF professionals, and long-term talent development approaches are highly recommended.
