Prof. TAM Kar Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School, expects that there will be growing socio-economic and environmental challenges arising from climate change and COVID, and therefore interdisciplinary education at business school will be needed to nurture transformational leaders.

Flexible MBA Program Helps Seize Career Opportunities

HK01 carried a supplement featuring a part-time MBA student, Derek Mak, on how the flexible and innovative teaching mode supports his study and work plan. In addition, the new elective “sustainable leadership” courses also equip him to be a socially responsible and sustainable business leader. Separately, SCMP featured Associate Dean and MBA Program Director Prof. CHEN Tai-Yuan, in an article on the changing cultural and technological needs of MBA programs in the Greater Bay Area. He said that HKUST’s flexible curriculum equips students with up-to-date training, sustainable leadership skills, and industry expertise.

Local DBA Programs Embrace New Normal

A supplement in SCMP featured HKUST’s new four-year DBA program. ISOM Head and Chair Prof. ZHENG Shaohui said that the program provides students with a consistently engaging and highly stimulating environment for learning and research.

HK01 featured an interview with Prof. Edwin LAI, Director of Center for Economic Development, on RMB’s internationalization and the role of Hong Kong. In another article in HK01, Prof. LAI introduced his book “One Currency, Two Markets: China’s Attempt to Internationalize the Renminbi”, and shared the opening-up of the onshore finance market is critical to RMB internationalization.

COVID-19 Prevention Strategies (January 30)
class="xxmsonormal">SpeakOut published an article by Emeritus Prof. Francis LUI, Department of Economics, on the strategies taken by different countries like China, the US, and Singapore in combating the pandemic. He said Hong Kong should learn and turn these insights into action.

Multilateral Cooperation to Defuse Tensions (January 13 & 27)
Prof. LI Jiatao, Department of Management, wrote an article in HK Economic Times (January 27) on how multilateralism meets the economic challenges brought by the Omicron variant. He also shared his view on economic disparity and fairness in HK Economic Times (January 13).

Pandemic Forecast with Network Density Analysis (January 26)
HK Economic Journal carried an article co-written by Prof. Mike SO, Department of ISOM, on using network density analysis to measure the risk of pandemic spread.

Developing Professional Talent for Tomorrow (January 24)
The mixed-mode learning of HKUST’s Master of Science in Accounting Program was reported by SCMP. It is designed to equip students with specialized knowledge to enter the HKICPA QP as well as related fields of finance, information systems, international business and investment.

The Evolution of Food Delivery (January 23)
HK Free Press cited comments by Chair Prof. Anirban MUKHOPADHYAY, Department of Marketing, in an article on the growing reliance on delivery platforms for HK restaurants. Prof. MUKHOPADHYAY said the city’s density and living constraints make it prime for food delivery.

e-Payment in Hong Kong (January 22)
Senior Associate Dean and Chair Prof. HUI Kai-Lung said in an RTHK radio program on the slow popularization of e-payment in Hong Kong that his recent research showing local people are not used to using credit cards for small amount payment and splitting bill is not widely accepted by shops.

Future Trends of Family Business Offices (January 20)
Prof. Winnie PENG, Director of Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies, published an article in HK Economic Times on the four new development trends of family businesses in Asia.

The Adoption of Return Insurance (January 19)
Insurance News Net featured a research study by Associate Prof. YU Man, Department of ISOM, on the return policy and return insurance emerging on various e-commerce platforms such as Taobao.com. It found that return insurance can be an effective signal of high quality.

US Inflation Forecast (January 19)
Financial Post mentioned the recent research paper co-written by Associate Prof. LU Yang (Department of Economics) and Boston University on how the policy regimes affected inflation forecasts in the US between the 1970s and 1980s.

Omicron-hit Birthday Bash and Prevention Measures (January 14)
Sky Post carried an article by Emeritus Prof. Francis LUI, Department of Economics, on the birthday party for Mr Witman HUNG and the HK government’s vaccination campaign.

Asian Countries’ Economic Prospects in 2022 (January 13 & 14)
Adjunct Prof. Alicia GARCIA HERRERO, Department of Economics, wrote in Storm media (January 14) on the impact of Omicron on worldwide economic growth. She also shared her views on some potential economic risks to Asian countries in Cnyes.com (January 13).
