Expert Opinions on Sino-US Trade War
Regional and local media carried interview or cited comments from faculty of the Business School on their expert opinions on different aspects of impacts owing to the escalating Sino-US trade war. Local portal UnwiredPo interviewed Prof Erwin HUANG of ISOM, Prof CHEN Tai Yuan and Dr Kelvin MAK of Accounting Department, whom offered opinions on respectively, , the return of China’s “concept IT stocks”, and the potential effect of tax policy (to be published soon).
Bloomberg zoomed in on the impact of Chinese sanctions on US lawmakers and organizations, in which Prof Edwin LAI, Department of Economics, said China is disadvantaged in the sanctions game because its payment system is underdeveloped and yuan internationalization is decades away. His comments were cited and reposted by AJot, Liberty Times Net, Sound of Hope, BNN Bloomberg, Yahoo, MSN, Business Mirror. In another article by BBC Chinese on major carmakers suing the US government over import China tax, Prof Albert PARK commented that the trade war should have receded by now from an economic perspective, but political calculation has overridden economic consideration. Emeritus Prof Francis LUI in his column in Headline Daily commented that the US’s sanctions against China would affect more the western countries including the US itself.
Research Looks if Financial Advisers Give Women Worse Advice
A number of international and regional media, including Bloomberg, Financial Standard, Latin Post, Fox Business, Finews.Asia, Yahoo Finance, Business World Online, Business Time, The Economic Times, Yahoo Singapore featured a study by Prof Utpal BHATTACHARYA and Amit KUMAR of the Department of Finance, and Prof Sujata VISARIA of the Department of Economics. The study covers local financial-planning firms in Hong Kong and finds consultants frequently pushed women into chancier investments than they recommended for men with similar risk appetite.

The Oxford Business Law Blog carried a research summary by Prof Alminas ZALDOKAS. The co-authored research looks into the cost of transparency in financial markets corporate collusion and examines whether corporate disclosures and earnings calls serve as coordination devices.
One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition (Sept 29)
Sina.com and Sohu and other mainland portals reported on the result of the HKUST Business School-HiCore Tech One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition, which concluded in Beijing on September 24. Meanwhile, a number of interview stories were featured prior to the competition, including with Dean of the Business School Prof TAM Kar Yan and Associate Dean Prof XU Yan, respectively on fintech and innovation, and the changing role of entrepreneurship.
How Business Students Are Chasing Careers in a Changed World (Sep 28)
Financial Times featured how business schools around the world provide career advice and support for students in the pandemic-stricken economy. The article mentioned that HKUST is employing machine learning to support students in the switch to online recruitment. Raymond XIAO of the Career Team for MSc Program of HKUST said the School has an AI platform that scans students’ CVs for keywords to help them pass screening tools and improve students’ performance in video interviews.
