Education Guide Features Business School PG Programs
features several postgraduate programs offered by the HKUST Business School. In an interview with Dean of the Business School, Prof TAM Kar-yan introduced the MSc in FinTech Program, jointly offered by Schools of Business, Science and Engineering. He says this new program is combining the University’s main strengths. In another article, MBA Program Director Prof CHEN Tai-yuan says, besides business, science and technology play a part in the success of HKUST MBA. Associate Dean Professor Steven DEKREY, in another article featuring EMBA programs offered by local and overseas players, says the high level of positions of its Kellogg-HKUST EMBA students hold remains a hallmark.

Hong Kong Virtual Banking Development (10 Dec)
HK01 zoomed in on the new banking era in Hong Kong amid the virtual banking licenses to be announced in Q1 of 2019. The article interviewed license applicants, bankers and subject experts including Dean of HKUST Business School Prof TAM Kar-yan. He explained the potential of virtual banking, which enables license holders to attract customers anywhere in the world and expand to other markets, as long as they meet the regulatory regime of different jurisdictions.

Economic Outlook & Cryptocurrency (Dec/Jan)
Cable TV Finance Channel invited Adjunct Prof KC CHAN to discuss the global and local financial markets in the past and coming year. The program in two episodes first reviewed the financial crisis in the past decade and its impact on Hong Kong, while the second part will look into new opportunities for Hong Kong in the Greater Bay Area and emerging areas like FinTech. Meanwhile, RTHK and Reuters invited Chair Prof HUI Kai Lung to talk about cryptocurrencies, bitcoin, Initial Coin Offering (ICO), etc. He reminded speculators of the associated risks of “bitcoin mining” and other forms of cryptocurrency.

Family Business Report (Dec)
A number of industry portals (including Campden, Asia Asset, Trader Arabia, International Investment, Zaway, finews.asia, Lombard Odier) carried the findings of a report titled “Where Technological Disruptors Meet Asian Family Businesses: Rethinking Next-Generation Leadership and Career”, authored by Prof Roger KING and Jeremy CHENG of the Tanoto for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies at HKUST. The report is based on the results of an extensive survey conducted by Lombard Odier and HKUST of 119 next generation members of family businesses in South East Asia and North Asia.

Meanwhile, Flady.com reported on a lecture presented by Prof Roger KING, Director of the Tanoto Center, who talked about the desires of wealth creators and wealthy families, as well as preservation of family wealth. A publication by the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business carried comments by Prof Winnie PENG, Associate Director of the Tanoto Center, on China’s young business heirs.

Smart Finance City (Dec 27)
Wen Wei Po reported on a forum discussing Hong Kong’s development into a smart finance city. The forum was organized by the Internet Professional Association, in which Adjunct Prof KC CHAN talked about the positive value of virtual banking. HKCNA.hk also reported on the same forum and cited Prof CHAN on how HK policy can support the development of FinTech and the Greater Bay Area.

Ming Pao carried a feature story of a Business School alumnus Charles CHEUNG on his passion for cooking and his determination to become a chef.

GBUS Alum Shares her Study Journey (Dec 7)
RTHK Hong Kong Story and Metro Daily featured GBUS alum Grace LAM, who was a top DSE scorer, on her study journey. She followed her interest to choose our GBUS program which developed her critical thinking and analytical skills. She is now working as a consultant with McKinsey.

Cybersecurity (Nov 27)
GNAM Perspective republished an article by Prof HUI Kai-lung on cybersecurity. The article is written after Cathay Pacific’s debacle in which more systems are found interconnected and thus trigger its potential vulnerabilities.
