Congratulations to Prof. JI Yan from the Department of Finance on being conferred as the 2025/26 Research Fellow by the Research Grants Council (RGC) in recognition of his distinguished research achievements.
As AI-driven trading accelerates, so do concerns about the risk of market manipulation by sophisticated speculators equipped with AI technologies. To investigate AI-powered imperfect competition in financial markets, Prof. JI will develop a comprehensive, data-driven quantitative framework, incorporating estimated synthetic trading environments from real market data and state-of-the-art reinforcement learning strengthened by deep learning techniques. Prof. JI’s work reflects HKUST Business School’s commitment to forward-looking research that addresses real-world challenges.
This annual Research Fellow Scheme provides continuous research support to outstanding researchers, along with relief from teaching and administrative duties, for a five-year period. Each year, approximately 10 mid-career Associate Professors are selected across all eight UGC-funded universities.
