Faculty Honored for Developing Impactful Cases

On the same occasion, the HKUST EMBA Alumni Association Award for Best Case 2023 was announced. The award was the School’s first case-related award to recognize faculty’s case development efforts since 2021. The winning case(s) were selected based on the global distribution data from the Thompson Center for Business Case Studies’ distribution partner, Harvard Business Publishing.

This year, the case “Morllex: Leading a Technology Start-Up in a Fast-Changing Environment” co-developed by Adjunct Assistant Professor Mark YOUNG and Adjunct Associate Professor CHOI Joon Nak of the Department of Management won the award. Based on a Hong Kong technology start-up, the Morllex case is a role-play case designed to teach students of organizational behavior and leadership courses how hostile team dynamics can make inherently solvable problems intractable. The case study has been widely adopted in classes both at HKUST and overseas institutions due to its high occurrence in real-life situations and its educational value.

Representatives of the HKUST EMBA Alumni Association, Ms. GAO Jing and Mr. LU Kwan, presented the award, and Associate Dean Professor FONG Yuk Fai and Professor Yan XU expressed gratitude to the Association for their donation in setting up the award.

The Thompson Center provided support for the development of the winning case. “HKUST cases are making a global impact, with over 90,000 copies of our cases used by universities worldwide since our partnership with HBP in late 2018,” said Professor Winnie PENG, Director of the Center.

The award highlights the exceptional work of our faculty in developing impactful cases for business education at the global level. We are proud of their contributions to case development at HKUST and look forward to their continued efforts.
