A regulatory technology (regtech) research project led by the Dean of HKUST Business School, Professor TAM Kar Yan, has been awarded funding by the Research Grants Council (RGC) in the Thirteenth Round of the Theme-based Research Scheme 2023/24. The RGC announced the funding results on July 13, 2023. Among a total of nine funded proposals, two are from HKUST. The regtech research project is the only funded project under the Theme “Enhancing Hong Kong’s Strategic Position as a Regional and International Business Center” of the Scheme. It is entitled “Strengthening Hong Kong as a Global Financial Center by Enhancing the Overall Regtech Capacity of the Industry and Facilitating the Regulation and Infrastructure Design of CBDC and Digital Assets in Hong Kong” with an approved budget of HK$5.624 million.

The regtech research project will address key issues of regtech that underscore the development of Hong Kong as an international financial center, by a strong interdisciplinary research team of scholars, experienced policymakers, and experts, who will make academic contributions and deliver intellectual and industrial impacts.
