On December 6, the HKUST EMBA Alumni Association Award for Best Case was presented at the Business School Board Meeting. Launched in 2021 as the School’s inaugural business case-related award, it is specially designed to recognize the efforts of faculty in developing cases at HKUST as well as contributing their cases to the education of other global institutions. Every year, a winning case is selected based on the global case distribution data from Harvard Business Publishing – the case distribution partner of the School’s Thompson Center for Business Case Studies.
This year’s winning case “Esquel Group: Fostering a Culture of Excellence” was written by Professor Suri GURUMURTHI and Professor Ronald LAU of the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management. Esquel is one of the world's largest cotton-based textile and apparel manufacturing companies; the case traced the company’s decision-making processes during the development of a greenfield site and helped students analyze and understand how company culture, leaders' vision, and business strategy can influence the requirements and scope of a project.
Mr Samuel YUNG, Chairman of HKUST EMBA Alumni Council, presented the award to both professors on behalf of the HKUST EMBA Alumni Association. Associate Dean Professor Yan XU also thanked the association for their generous donation to establish the award.
The Thompson Center for Business Case Studies has provided support to both faculty members in the case development process. “Since the inception of the Thompson Center, our goals have been to firstly encourage and support more faculty members to write cases and secondly to increase the impact of HKUST cases. More than 40 faculty members have been involved in case writing so far. Three years ago, we also partnered with Harvard Business Publishing and many universities around the world have used nearly 40,000 copies of our cases”, said Professor Peng.
HKUST EMBA Program also celebrated the achievement of alumna Ms Shirley Huaqin JIN for receiving the Outstanding Women Business Leader Award 2021 organized by Hong Kong Commercial Daily.
Congratulations to both professors and Ms Jin!
