Professor Songnian CHEN, Chair Professor of the Department of Economics, has been named a Senior Research Fellow by the Research Grants Council (RGC). This prestigious scheme selects ten awardees every year and provides HK$7.8 million in funding to support a five-year extensive research period for each awardee. The scheme also facilitates the professors’ dedication to research and development and helping universities attract and retain research talent. Professor CHEN’s project examines the “Quantile Regression Subject to Sample Selection with Continuous and Binary Outcomes.”

Professor Sujata VISARIA, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics, has been appointed to join the Standing Panel on Impact Assessment (SPIA) at CGIAR – an international research partnership formerly known as the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research. SPIA consists of a panel of six experts on impact assessment and is tasked with providing rigorous, evidence-based, and independent strategic advice to the CGIAR system. This includes efficient and effective impact assessment methods and practices, and innovative ways to enhance the contribution of research knowledge and capacity on various development outcomes.
What’s more, between June 30 and July 3, our faculty received two out of five Best Paper Awards at the European Financial Management Association conference (EFMA). Professor Allen HUANG and Professor Yue ZHENG from the Department of Accounting, and Professor Kai Wai HUI from the University of Hong Kong won the 2021 Best Conference Research Award with their paper “Judge Ideology, SEC Enforcement, and Insider Trading.” Another paper entitled “The Hedging Footprint” by Professor Peter MACKAY from the Department of Finance, Professor Sara B. MOELLER from the University of Pittsburgh, and Professor Scott LINN from the University of Oklahoma won the GARP 2021 Risk Management Award. The paper was also a runner-up at the 2020 Financial Management Association conference.
