Enhancing Social Mobility for Youths by Promoting I&T
HK Economic Times published a series of commentary articles by Associate Dean Prof. XU Yan on his research report on enhancing upward mobility for HK youths by promoting innovation and technology (I&T) development. The focused on overcoming challenges faced by HK’s I&T sector, while the second one was about promoting I&T through knowledge transfer at tertiary institutions. The issues facing the millennials were discussed in the third article. HK Commercial Daily also carried an article on this study.

Vaccine Effectiveness in Data-Deficient Scenarios
Various media including HK Commercial Daily, HKCNA, Indian Education Diary, News Patrolling, Mirage News, Pharma Leaders, Media Bulletins, Business News Week, APN News, Medgate Today, BW Education, Bio Spectrum and Health News Express, featured HKUST Business School’s research which demonstrated how to measure vaccine effectiveness in the absence of adequate public health data. The research offered an easy-to-implement alternative to current measurement and kept data-deficient countries informed when formulating and adjusting their vaccination and immunization policies.

China to Create Yuan Liquidity Reserve Pool with BIS (June 29)
Central Banking cited insights by Prof. Edwin Lai, Department of Economics, on an article about the announcement by the People’s Bank of China to set up a yuan reserve pool with the Bank of International Settlements (BIS), along with five other central banks in the Asia-Pacific region.

HK Residents Looking North (June 28)
SCMP cited comments by Jason YUEN, a business alumnus, in an article on the rising number of HK young people looking to buy a home in the Greater Bay Area. Jason mentioned his plan to expand his start-up specializing in smart transport solutions to Qianhai, Shenzhen and to have his accommodation there in the long run.

Ways to Advance Global Finance Career (June 23)
BusinessBecause featured an advertorial of the Business School in which Daniel FIELDS and Troy COWDREY, alumni of the HKUST-NYU Stern MSc in Global Finance, shared how the program helped advance their career in global finance.

Innovating Towards a No Food Waste Future (June 20)
Ming Pao ran two articles about three business and computer engineering alumni’s entrepreneurial journey of founding Flash Green, a social enterprise focusing on recycling residual stock of short-dated food products and redistributing them to the needy through vending machines and mobile app. (Links to article 1 and article 2)

Restoring Cross-border Travel with the Mainland Vital to HK (June 16)
Wen Wei Po cited comments from Emeritus Prof. Francis LUI, Department of Economics, in an article on Hong Kong being ranked the fifth most competitive economy, saying that the resumption of normal traveler clearance would be vital for Hong Kong’s economic recovery.

Challenges Facing Global Banks Operating in Mainland China (June 12, 13 & 14)
Various media including Law.com, Japan Times, Bloomberg and BNN Bloomberg cited the remarks by Associate Prof. Veronique LAFON-VINAIS, Department of Finance, on the increasing challenges facing global banks operating in Mainland China and on the need for Wall Street banks to ask the true return on capital for their China business.

HK’s First-Degree Programs and Extended Major (June 10)
Headline Daily and Bastille Post featured an article on Business School’s new programs such as “BSc in Sustainable and Green Finance”, “BSc in the Risk Management and Business Intelligence + MSc Fintech dual degree 4+1 pathway”, and the new “major + X options”. Prof. Emily NASON, Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and Admissions, said HKUST was the most internationalized institute among all subsidized universities in HK with students coming from over 70 countries/ jurisdictions.

Business School with Positive Impact (June 9)
Poets and Quants and FE News reported that the HKUST Business School was rated as level 4 (“Transforming Schools”) in the five-level Positive Impact Rating. Three years in a row, the School was the only business school in Hong Kong recognized for its social impact and sustainability achievements by the rating.

HK’s Development after Handover and Way Forward (June 7)
HK Economic Journal ran three articles in which Adjunct Prof. KC CHAN, Department of Finance, offered his views on HK’s post-handover development and the way forward for HK. He compared the current wave of emigration with the previous ones and shared why he decided to return to HK from the US to accept HKUST appointment in the early 1990s. HK Towards a Leading Global Fintech Hub (June 2 & 11)
HK Economic Times carried two articles by Dean Prof. TAM Kar Yan on key features of a global fintech hub and HK’s capabilities to develop into a leading global fintech hub as outlined by a study “HK Towards a Leading Global FinTech Hub” led by him.

Asia’s First-Ever Digital MBA (June 2 & 3)
Bangkok Post, Inside Asian Gaming and China Admissions featured advertorials on HKUST Business School’s Digital MBA for Global Leaders program.

Business Undergraduate Shines in Competition (June 1)
HK Economic Journal reported Year 3 BBA student Jason CHEUNG won the championship of the Pitch Perfect Programme organized by HK General Chamber of Commerce, with a cash prize of HK$18,000 and a one-day job shadowing with Eric FOK, Vice President of Fok Ying Tung Group.
