The idea of the Metaverse has existed longer than most would have thought. The term first appeared in a science fiction novel in 1992. One of the first implementations of the Metaverse dates back to the gaming program Second Life in 2003. At the time, the popularity of the game sky-rocketed, attracting renowned companies to invest in virtual worlds, thus kickstarting the Metaverse craze.
Together with blockchain technology, the decentralization of the Metaverse has secured its users from being affected by a centralized company’s decisions. Along with the popularity of online meetings during the pandemic, the advancement of AI and VR technology also popularised the Metaverse. In the near future, the Metaverse will open more opportunities for gaming, education, careers, and more.
