The School of Business and Management of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) today announced that two of the School’s experts in fintech — Dean Professor TAM Kar Yan and Associate Dean Professor Allen HUANG, have joined the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) Expert Group to help shed light on the new electronic form of central bank money, and contribute to Hong Kong’s development into a major global fintech hub.
The HKMA CBDC Expert Group is a newly established platform that fosters collaboration between group members, and with other stakeholders on CBDC and relevant fintech issues. By bringing together leading academics in different disciplines from local universities, the Group aims to generate expert inputs from technical, analytical and academic perspectives, promote inter-disciplinary discussions, provide advisory and training services and conduct research on various aspects of CBDC and fintech.
Professor Tam Kar Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School, said, “With our multi-disciplinary expertise in fintech, our School has been actively exploring the potential of CBDC through various research and stakeholder engagement initiatives. These include industry research projects, public opinion surveys, seminars, and a use case for the Hypothetical e-HKD. The use case is led by Professor Marc DORDAL CARRERAS and Professor Kohei KAWAGUCHI. The HKMA CBDC Expert Group is a major step towards fostering closer collaboration among government, industry, and academia to examine CBDC-related issues. As Hong Kong explores new possibilities in the digital currency space, we are honored to be part of this partnership to share our insights and experience.”
