The Government’s recent policy statement on virtual asset (VA) has articulated Hong Kong’s vision and approach for developing a vibrant VA sector in Hong Kong. Featuring Non-Fungible-Token (NFT) and Metaverse as the main theme, HKUST Fintechstic – HKUST Business School’s annual fintech education event – has returned this year to promote skill development and application in the VA space through an engaging educational event series for both tertiary students and the public. The event saw 50 student teams from local universities, mostly business and engineering majors, engage in contests of fintech skills, and about 3,000 people participate in an online trivia on Metaverse- and NFT-related topics, Hong Kong’s first-of-its-kind public education program on fintech and a satellite event of the Hong Kong FinTech Week.

Sponsored by HSBC as part of the strategic partnership earlier announced between the bank and HKUST to facilitate fintech development, this year’s edition of HKUST Fintechstic has fostered a greater awareness of fintech concepts and businesses through educational workshops, a student competition, and a quiz game for the general public. Comprising workshops, mentoring sessions and presentations, the month-long student competition has equipped the student teams with essential skills in applying their knowledge of NFT and Metaverse to solve real business issues. A joint-university team of five students from HKUST and HKU has been named the champion at the competition, taking home a cash prize of $12,000 and fast-track internship interview opportunities.

Professor TAM Kar Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School, says, “With growing recognition of NFT and Metaverse as the key enabler for the next wave of digital transformation, this year’s Fintechstic has expanded the learning opportunities in these key technologies by engaging the general public. The strong reception of HKUST Fintechstic competition by tertiary students across the territory underscores our School’s efforts to develop talent proficient in applying leading-edge technologies in real-life settings, and to prepare students for a career in the fast growing fintech sector. We are thankful to our sponsor HSBC and our industry partners for making this event possible, and for sharing their industry insights with event participants.”

Supporting industry partners of HKUST Fintechstic include ARTA TechFin Corporation Limited, Coinstreet, FORMS HK, HashKey Group, IEEE Hong Kong Blockchain Group, Invest Hong Kong, MaiCapital Limited, Moon Lab, and Powerhouse Technologies.
