A team formed by four undergraduate students from University of Southern California in USA was crowned the champion at the 18th HKUST International Case Competition (HKICC) on June 10, 2022, outshining peers from top business schools around the world. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was the first runner-up, while Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and University of New South Wales came in third and fourth place respectively.

Organized by the School of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) and sponsored by New World Development (NWD), HKICC — Asia’s first and leading international case competition, returned this year in virtual format, featuring the sustainability theme for the first time in the competition’s history. Participating teams had to work together to review the two cases provided by sponsor and case company - New World Development. The kick-off case, Impact Kommons, was Asia’s first start-up accelerator targeted at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while facilitating business integration between the start-ups and NWD’s business units. The Main case, New World Build for Good, was a not-for-profit housing enterprise which aims to seek short to medium-term solutions and long-term strategies to address Hong Kong’s housing and land supply problems.

Running for five days from June 6 to 10, 2022, this year’s contest saw the participation of nine teams from universities in Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Serbia, Singapore, Thailand, the Netherlands, the UK, and the USA. Participating teams collaborated online and put forward strategic recommendations to case company New World Development. The competition enabled students to exchange views and share experiences with peers from world-renowned business schools, in addition to getting feedback from a panel of judges comprising senior executives from the case company and representatives from the education, government, and consulting sectors.
