(Hong Kong) – Indiana University from the USA has been crowned champion in the Citi - HKUST International Case Competition (“CICC”) 2016, defeating 14 other outstanding teams from top business schools around the world to take the highest honor in the prestigious annual contest. The winning team devised a visionary strategy for HKT, premier telecommunications service provider and leading operator in fixed-line, broadband and mobile communication services; and a Citi client.

The CICC reached a new milestone running as Asia’s first and leading international case competition bringing around 100 undergraduate business students annually to Hong Kong. Sponsored by Citi and co-organized with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology’s School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School), this year’s competition challenged students to present viable solutions in just 22 hours to address the strategic issues faced by the case company, HKT. HKT provided the students with a challenging case to turning around and repositioning its eSmartHealth business, a cloud health data management service.

Weber Lo, Citi Country Officer and CEO, Hong Kong & Macau, said, “We have witnessed top-notch performance from all the participants in the CICC 2016. I am delighted to see the strong collaborative spirit in each participating team and for this; I believe everyone is a winner. At Citi, our mission is to provide financial services responsibly to enable growth and economic progress. CICC is one of the many ways Citi demonstrates this commitment, at the same time helping to develop responsible leaders of the future.”

“We at the HKUST Business School believe in the power of real-life learning experience to nurture future business leaders,” said Prof Kar Yan Tam, Dean of HKUST Business School. “We would like to express our sincere thanks to our long-standing partner Citi for its support to this meaningful event, which has provided an exceptional opportunity for students around the world to discover for themselves and address real-world business challenges.”

Held in Hong Kong between October 23 and 28, the fourteenth annual CICC attracted 15 teams from 10 countries and markets, including Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Norway, Singapore, Thailand, the Netherlands, and the U.S.A. The judging panel of the competition comprises of senior executives from the HKT, Citi Hong Kong and global management consulting firm.

The first and second runners-up are Queensland University of Technology and National University of Singapore respectively.
