A team of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's School of Business and Management (HKUST Business School) undergraduate students finished second at McGill Management International Case Competition held from March 23-27 in Canada. The champion went to Thammasat University. The second runner-up was Wharton at University of Pennsylvania.
Organized by the McGill University in Montreal, the competition included 10 schools from Asia, North America and Europe.
This year, the case that the teams had to tackle was about the growth strategy of a Canadian artistic entertainment company. They also had to deal with other aspects such as market analysis, implementation and financial backup plans.
The HKUST team comprised four undergraduate students from the Global Business and Marketing programs. They are Alex Wong Chun-kit, Ula Xue Yuxing, Vivien Yip Wai-ying and Jasmine Ling Hoh-yan.
"The competition is a truly memorable experience and intellectual challenging. The committee of MMICC invited students from top business schools all over the world. This gives us an opportunity to make friends with different people. The competition itself is very exciting. We were given the business case only twenty-four hours before the presentation, the time pressure undoubtedly made it more stressful for us to come up with ideas but this is also the most interesting part of the case competition. " said Vivien Yip.
Professor Lynn Pi, HKUST team advisor said: "It's amazing what an excellent job the students are able to accomplish within a mere 24 hour case cracking period. All the teams came up with very fine analysis and presentations, which makes it a real honor for our team to be chosen as the second best by the judges."
McGill Management International Case Competition (MMICC)
The MMICC was first held in 2001. The annual event focuses on cases centered on innovation and globalization. This year, ten leading business schools from around the world took part in the competition. Each school was represented by a team of four undergraduate students. Teams received the case on March 26 and were given 24 hours to deliberate. Presentations were held on March 27. Each team presented to two different panels of judges and received the judges' feedback afterwards.
