The School of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) has risen to No.1 on Asia-Inc's list of top MBA schools in Asia, up from its No. 5 position in the last survey in 2000. This is the first time a Hong Kong institution has been ranked first in any regional/international business school rankings.
Released online and in printed magazine version today, the Asia-Inc survey noted that "the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School has rocketed to the top after only 10 years of operation ...... the depth of HKUST's academic resources and the calibre of the students it attracts emerged as important strengths in the Asia-Inc survey."
The Asia-Inc ranking is based on a survey sent to the most prominent business schools in the region. This year, 56 schools were surveyed, of which 36 responded. Only schools which returned the questionnaires were ranked.
The survey measures a school based on three criteria: faculty resources, student quality and academic reputation.
HKUST ranks No. 1 overall in the region, followed by Australian Graduate School of Management (No. 2), National University of Singapore (No. 3), Chinese University of Hong Kong (No. 4), with Melbourne Business School (No. 5) rounding out the top-5.
In the three areas that comprise the Asia-Inc rankings, HKUST is placed 1st in both faculty resources and student quality, and 2nd in academic reputation. Lauded as "a truly global academy", Asia-Inc's survey says that the global-standard intellectual capital that HKUST possess is its real advantage.
Professor Paul Chu, President of HKUST, said: "I am very pleased to see that the school has enjoyed a period of great accomplishment and progress since the beginning
of the year. The ranking attests to the quality of our faculty and students who are extraordinarily dedicated and accomplished, and validates that HKUST continues to be recognized as the leading business school in the region."
Professor K.C. Chan, Acting Dean of HKUST Business School said: "It is very gratifying to see our school rated so highly by other Asian business school deans. The fact that two Hong Kong business schools have made the top-4 in the survey is a strong testimony to the high quality of management education available in this city."
Dr Steve DeKrey, Director of HKUST MBA Program: "We are the youngest of the top-10 business schools and are competing with the very best in the region, so we are truly proud of what we have achieved here."
