Celebrating 35 Years of Shared Journeys and Connections
In celebrating HKUST’s 35th anniversary, the Department of Economics hosted a conference, “HKUST Economics: Past, Present, and Future – 35th Anniversary Conference” in May. The event convened over 30 speakers, bringing together long-time friends, PhD alumni, and homegrown researchers for a vibrant and dynamic intellectual exchange.

Department Head Prof. LIM Wooyoung (above right image) inaugurated the first day by reflecting on the department’s history and charting its future development. The program featured engaging parallel sessions spanning micro theory, macroeconomics, international trade, and more—reflecting the broad expertise of the department’s academic community.

Moving beyond the lecture halls, participants enjoyed a scenic outing to Sai Kung on the second day, cementing lifelong professional and personal connections. The inspiring sight of returning global alumni alongside current faculty underscored the profound impact of the department. Moving forward, the Department will continue driving impactful research and nurturing the next generation of economists.

Annual Economics Honor Thesis Workshop
The Department hosted its annual honor thesis workshop specifically designed for undergraduate Economics students. This workshop plays a vital role in the Honor Thesis Program, offering participants an exceptional opportunity to elevate their academic skills and research capabilities to a new level.

Throughout the program, students engage in comprehensive research projects that align with their interests, working closely with a faculty supervisor who provides guidance and expertise. Participants are encouraged to conduct rigorous analysis, craft a well-structured thesis, and develop the skills necessary for effectively presenting their findings.
Graduation Dinner for the Class of 2026
The Department hosted a graduation dinner for the Class of 2026, welcoming over 130 students from both undergraduate and master’s programs, along with faculty members, to celebrate this important milestone.

The event commenced with opening remarks by Department Head Prof. LIM Wooyoung, whose message highlighted the achievements of the graduating class and set a warm, celebratory tone. The program featured a variety of activities, including games, lucky draws, and talent performances, creating an engaging atmosphere and underscoring the strong sense of community within the Department.

Bringing MSc ECON Alumni and Students Together
The MSc in Economics Program hosted its Alumni and Student Mixer, bringing together over 170 alumni, current students, and faculty members for an evening of connection and exchange.

The event began with opening remarks by Prof. WANG Peng, Academic Director of the Program. A key highlight was the panel discussion, “From Economics to Impact: Navigating Careers Across Finance, Technology, and Beyond”, moderated by Prof. HE Dean, Associate Director of the Program. Distinguished speakers shared valuable insights on applying economic thinking, adaptability, and continuous learning in an evolving global economy. Adding vibrancy to the evening, talent shows performed by our alumni and students created a lively atmosphere.

The evening concluded with a buffet dinner, offering a relaxed setting for networking and reconnection. More than a social gathering, the strong turnout reflected the vitality of the MSc in Economics community and its commitment to strengthening alumni connections.
