We are profoundly saddened by the loss of our Founding President, Prof. Chia-Wei WOO, who passed away in March. Prof. Woo’s visionary leadership and dedication were instrumental in establishing HKUST as a leading research university in Hong Kong and beyond.

Prof. Woo served as HKUST President from 1991 to 2001, during which he laid the foundation for a world-class institution that has significantly contributed to the advancement of technology and education in Hong Kong and the region. His foresight in proposing the Hong Kong Bay Area in the 1990s has left a lasting impact on the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Mourning the passing of Prof. Woo, HKUST Business School Acting Dean Prof. HUI Kai-Lung said, “Realizing the essential complementarity relationship between science and technology innovations and business, Prof. Woo championed the interdisciplinary education at HKUST with our Business School as one of the core and essential constituents since day one. His significant contributions will continue to benefit our future generations.”

HKUST held a memorial service on March 19 to honor the profound contributions of Prof. Woo.
