The 15th Symposium on Risk Management and Business Intelligence 2024, organized by the BSc in Risk Management and Business Intelligence (RMBI) Program at HKUST, on March 23, was a resounding success. Diverse attendees, including academic scholars, practitioners, alumni, and students, converged to explore the transformative power of Generative AI and Business Innovations.

The event commenced with a warm welcome speech from Prof. CHEUNG Ki Ling, RMBI Program Director, setting the stage for insightful discussions. Industry leaders from Microsoft, Google, Alibaba, Bloomberg, and ThinkCol Transfer shared their expertise, emphasizing practical applications and responsible AI practices. The engaging panel discussion, facilitated by Prof. Jean WANG, RMBI UG Coordinator, highlighted the growing demand for AI talent and the significance of robust skills in AI development.

Attendees gained in-depth knowledge of the latest trends in risk management and business intelligence, witnessing the exciting potential of AI to drive business innovation. The symposium served as a valuable platform for professionals and students to connect, network, and envision the future impact of AI on business. Inspired and motivated, participants left ready to push the boundaries of AI-driven innovation.

Here are the highlights from our distinguished speakers:

Mr. Fred SHEU, National Technology Officer, Microsoft Hong Kong, reminded us that AI models must embody fairness, safety, and inclusivity. Microsoft emphasized the need to develop AI systems while adhering to data privacy and security laws. Bias-free AI, transparency, and human accountability for AI outcomes were key points.


Mr. Michael YUE (Kellogg-EMBA alumnus), Managing Director and General Manager, Google Hong Kong, shared Google’s commitment to using AI for social good, spanning healthcare, climate, and city planning. Responsible AI practices and collaborative ecosystem efforts were underscored.


Mr. Leo LIU (EMBA alumnus), Vice President, International Business, and General Manager, North APAC Region, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence International, introduced Alibaba Cloud’s open-source models. They harnessed internet-wide data to provide flexible and cost-effective ideas from the public sector.


Mr. Kenny CHONG, APAC Equity Derivatives Market Specialist, Bloomberg L.P, and Mr. Mark TEO, Global AI Product Manager, Communications Analytics, Bloomberg L.P, revealed what traders and salespeople engage with daily with a captivating demo. They also advised that proficiency in programming and data manipulation is essential for transforming raw data into actionable trading ideas.

Mr. Kane WU, CEO and Founder, ThinkCol Transform, explained the practical application of generative AI through various projects including an Internal Document Search Bot. Connecting large language models empowers employees to query and comprehend internal policies effectively.
