As we step into a new year, we are thrilled to draw a full house of audience in our first alumni event in 2024. Our Alumni Luncheon Series – “Driving Change: Exploring the Next Frontier in Green Transportation” not only attracted our energetic alumni from various programs, but also our Council members, guests, and faculty members on January 23.

Mr. LI Yunfei, our EMBA alumnus (Class of 2017) and General Manager of the Brand and Public Relations Division at BYD Company Limited (比亞迪), spoke and offered his inspiring insights into the impact of green energy development on sustainability and how innovation and unique technologies of electric vehicles can propel the mainland auto industry and become one of the top automakers in the world.

With active participation from the audience that enlightened the discussion, the interactive dialogue was concluded with a high note by our moderator Professor FONG Yuk Fai, Associate Dean of HKUST Business School and Academic Director of the HKUST EMBA Program.

EMBA Alumni Visit to BYD – A Journey to “New Energy Vehicles”

A few weeks before the Luncheon, over 40 alumni of the HKUST EMBA program visited BYD’s global headquarters in Shenzhen. Led by the Senior Associate Dean of our Business School Professor HUI Kai Lung, Associate Dean Professor FONG Yuk Fai, and Honorary Fellow of HKUST Professor Caroline WANG, the group had an exceptional opportunity to explore BYD's innovation and brand development.

Organized by Mr. LI Yunfei, together with Mr. CAO Xi, Assistant to General Manager of BYD Brand and Public Relations Department, also an HKUST EMBA alumnus (Class of 2019), the visit enabled participants to see firsthand how BYD is dedicated to technological innovation for a better life. With over 20 years of development, BYD has industrial parks worldwide, covering electronics, automobiles, new energy, and rail transit. As a leading enterprise in the new energy industry, BYD offers comprehensive zero-emission energy solutions and focuses on problem-solving and innovation.

During the visit, the alumni learned about BYD’s history in the Group’s Exhibition Hall and Technology Museum. They explored core technologies like Blade Battery, CTB, and DM, as well as smart manufacturing and intelligent transportation. They were impressed by BYD's commitment to technology and innovation.

The alumni also experienced one of BYD’s intelligent transportation products, the SkyShuttle, with 100% independent intellectual property rights and the highest level of autonomous driving system. SkyRail system runs not only in China, but also in countries like South Asia and Brazil.

The group engaged in discussions about the new energy vehicles, corporate strategies, and BYD's products. The visit concluded with an exchange of gifts and well wishes. Thanks to the support provided by Mr. Li as well as the participation from our alumni, the program office will continue to facilitate visits to leading corporations to promote mutual growth and development among our alumni.
