We are delighted to share the exciting news that our undergraduate teams shone and won multiple awards in various case competitions in the past few months:

First Runner-up in the 18th HKUST International Case Competition

This year’s HKUST International Case Competition was held online attracting leading business schools from Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Serbia, Singapore, Thailand, the Netherlands, the UK and the USA to join. By putting forward strategic recommendations to the New World Development (NWD), the sponsor of the event, the participating teams presented to senior executives of the company and representatives from the education, government and consulting sectors.

The kick-off case – Impact Kommons – is Asia’s first start-up accelerator aimed at achieving the United Nations Sustainable Goals. And the main case – New World Build for Good – is a not-for-profit housing enterprise seeking solutions and strategies to Hong Kong’s housing and land supply issues.

The University of Southern California took the championship in this prestigious annual contest, while the home team HKUST claimed the first runner-up title. Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and University of New South Wales came in third and fourth place respectively.

The HKUST Team was formed by four BBA Global Business students, including Max FUNG, LAU Tsz Wing Sonia (Year 3), TAM Yet Ting (Year 2), and David TSE (Year 1). And Sonia also won the Best Presenter Award in the Competition. Their team advisor Professor Chris DORAN was delighted and proud of their achievement and dedication. “I was especially impressed by the well-organized support they received from alumni and students from previous years, showing the strength of connection across years and cohorts in the HKUST community. The team made great progress in both the analytical and presentation skills, showing great improvement in projecting passion even with a Zoom presentation.”

As part of the five-day competition program, participants also had the chance to build lasting friendships through various online social activities. Click here for competition highlight videos and case books.

First Place in the Belgrade Business International Case Competition 2022

Another undergraduate team achieved great accomplishments by winning the short case competition in the Belgrade Business International Case Competition (BBICC) 2022! Consisting of Year 2 World Bachelor in Business students, Neha Sriya GANAPATHINEEDI, Gaurav GARG, Kevin Ryan HUERLIMANN, and Mackenzie Ruth KORENT, the team prepared presentations and trained under their mentors Professor Stephen NASON and program alumni, Adrian TANG (Class of 2018).

The team presented a strategy for the development of a tourist offer of Topola Municipality based on the key assumption: "in the post-pandemic world, people would like to have glorious weddings at beautiful sites such as vineyards and take breath-taking photos". They managed to combine great customer experience and customer journey, with the current assets of the company, i.e. the beautiful landscape and high-end gastro and hotels offer, leveraging the company’s position and how to make new market proposition for tourists.

As one of the top undergraduate business case competitions globally, the competition offers a unique opportunity for international students to experience Serbia and its culture. Contesting teams are required to come up with business solutions in two cases of five-hour and 24-hour windows respectively and presented their ideas to a panel of senior executives of the international business community.
