Awarded by: The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences

The Frank M Bass Dissertation Paper Award honors the best PhD thesis of the year in marketing science and management science and this year it has been awarded to Prof Jun Kim, Assistant Professor in the Department of Marketing.

Prof Kim studied how consumers browse and buy products on Amazon.com and found that the vast majority of users benefited from the company's product recommendations because they lowered search costs.

Prof Kim joined the Business School this summer from Georgia Institute of Technology. His research papers have appeared in top ranked journals such as Marketing Science and the Journal of Marketing Research. He also worked for more than five years with a global enterprise software company in Silicon Valley. He holds two PhDs - one in Management from UCLA Anderson School and the other in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.

The Bass Award was conferred at the Marketing Science Conference held in Boston in June 2012. Candidates must have had a paper derived from their PhD thesis published in a journal sponsored by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).
