The world stands at the crossroads of unprecedented economic transformation, and we at HKUST Business School are excited to contribute to the dialogue with a revitalized platform. Marking a new chapter, our school magazine is now rebranded as HKUST Business Review, a title that reflects our commitment to thought leadership and academic rigor. With this refreshed identity, the magazine delivers engaging, accessible, and research-driven articles that bridge the gap between intellectual exploration and practical application, catering to academics, industry leaders, and professionals alike.
In this inaugural issue under our new identity, we are proud to present five research- based business articles, each offering timely insights into pressing managerial, technological, and economic challenges. What makes these articles unique is their Harvard Business Review style approach: our faculty take rigorous academic research and present it in clear, accessible language, avoiding jargon and focusing on practical, actionable steps for leaders. Every article begins with a strong hook— be it a vivid anecdote, a pressing problem, or a surprising insight—to capture readers’ attention and deliver impactful takeaways.
The cover theme for this issue, Rewiring the Global Economy, delves into the forces reshaping global trade, finance, and collaboration. We explore the profound shifts underway and their implications for businesses, governments, and society at large.
We begin with insights from Dr. William FUNG, Group Deputy Chairman of the Fung Group, who examines the systematic dismantling and reconstruction of global supply chains, driven by geopolitical tensions and technological innovations. Charles LI, former Chief Executive of HKEX and Founder of Micro Connect, highlights his efforts to foster financial inclusivity and support small businesses in China.
Professor Albert PARK, Chief Economist at the Asian Development Bank, discusses how emerging Asian economies are becoming dynamic architects of the global economic system. Professor Keyu JIN, Chair of the Center for Geoeconomics, HKUST Institute for Financial Research, offers a perspective on how deglobalization, shifting alliances, and technological advances are shaping a new economic era.
We round out the theme with insights from a seminar featuring Andy TUNG, James THOMPSON, and Professor Edwin LAI on U.S. tariff policy, and an alumni forum where business leaders and faculty discuss strategies for managing this transformative period.
As we embark on this exciting journey, I invite you to explore these timely topics and leverage the insights from our faculty, alumni, and industry leaders to navigate the challenges and opportunities of this dynamic era.
