HKUST Business School is consolidating its position as a global leader in business education and research. This means not only new programs and strategies, but also a new home to help us fulfil our ambitions.

The Lee Shau Kee Business Building, which is surrounded by lush greenery and has panoramic sea views, has been purpose-built to meet our everyday needs and our grander ambitions. Its facilities enable the School to provide a stimulating learning environment, while being a hub of academic exchange for scholars and business leaders from around the world.

The timing of the new building’s completion coincides with an unprecedented expansion of the School’s educational footprint. The 3-3-4 education reform in Hong Kong increased the number of undergraduate years from three to four starting in 2012, which means we now have more students on campus and need extra space to house them. But we are not simply adding numbers. We are also enriching our program offerings.

Recently, the School has launched a series of new programs that have an international focus, including the World Bachelor in Business, a pioneering three-continent UG program in collaboration with the University of Southern California in the US and Bocconi University in Italy; the MSc Program in International Management, in collaboration with CEMS; and the MSc Program in Global Operations. Two new full-time Master’s programs, namely MSc in Investment Management and MSc in Accounting, will also be introduced in 2014/15. The new building enables us to implement these initiatives with world-class facilities.

The new building has more than 12,400 square metres of modern, technologically-equipped classrooms, meeting rooms, computer laboratories and other facilities to cater for our 300 staff and 4,300 students. There are also open study areas and breakout rooms to enhance the learning environment for our students, and lounge areas for our staff.

A lecture theatre that seats 200 people offers opportunities for hosting larger lectures and meetings. The building also features a courtyard and a rooftop garden that provide green open spaces for gatherings.

Professor Kalok Chan, Acting Dean of HKUST Business School, says the completion of the new building, which is one of the main buildings in the HKUST’s Lee Shau Kee Campus, is a milestone for the School as it embarks on its third decade. The next 10 years will see the School capitalize on its past achievements and solidify its position as a leading 21st century educator.

“This beautifully-located building provides an ideal place for us to pursue innovation and excellence in all that we do, from advancing business knowledge and developing business leaders to contributing to the economic and social advancement of the region,” he said.

From the hardware to the software, the new building befits a world-class business school of the 21st century.
