Manpower Study Looks into Core Competencies Required by Fintech Industry
Local dailies, including , Sing Tao, HK Economic Times, ODN, HK01, Ta Kung Pao, Wen Wei Po, Lion Rock Daily, LINE Today, Bastillepost reported a “Fintech Talent Development, Competency and Manpower Study” conducted by the School’s Fintech Research Project Team. Highlighting the strong demand for fintech talent, Dean Prof. TAM Kar Yan talked about the most needed competencies for fintech professionals, and wrote in an HKET column detailing the key observations from this industry-wide survey with the participation of more than 80 fintech companies. The study, which was also featured in supplements in SCMP and HKET, aims to provide a useful point of reference for industry players, educational institutions and the government to map out their talent development strategies.

Local dailies, including Headline Daily, HK Economic Times and ODN reported on the latest EMBA Rankings for Joint Programs conducted by QS. TRIUM claimed top spot, while the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA was ranked No.2 holding either the first or second places for four straight years.

App for Minibuses (June 29)
In a column in HK Economic Times discussing customer satisfaction in public transport, the app - “USTransit” - co-developed by alumnus Jason YUEN which provides information on minibus arrival time, was featured as an example that helps enhanced the satisfaction level.

Emeritus Prof. Francis LUI, Department of Economics, wrote in HK Economic Times to explain why professionals may leave the US in the wake of the US President Donald Trump’s restriction on immigration policies and western government’s poor handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Emeritus Prof. Francis LUI wrote in HK Economic Times on the US’ proposed sanctions on HK and UK’s possible loosening of immigration requirements for BNO passport holders due to the National Security Law. He pointed out that such moves may benefit HK’s economy as it would reduce the inflow of funds into the local banking system.

In an interview by SUP China with Adjunct Prof. Alicia GARCIA-HERRERO, Department of Economics, she talked about the US’s plan to remove Hong Kong’s special status. She said that Hong Kong’s role as a buffer between China and the West is at stake, but the city may retain its role as an offshore RMB center in Asia.

US’s Sanctions and HK’s Economy (1-3 June)
Several media portals, including SCMP, HKCNA, China News and Liberty Times, cited comments by Prof. Emeritus Francis LUI. He pointed out that the effect of US’s sanctions on HK economy would not affect the position of the city as an international financial hub, and such move would hurt US companies instead since they have many investments in HK. He added that if the US was to exclude China from the USD Clearing System, it would speed up the RMB internationalization. Meanwhile, HKET.com cited comments by Chair Prof. Albert PARK to BBC that the US’ decision to revoke HK’s preferential trade and financial status would not lead to any major impact on mainland trades as its export through HK has declined over the years.
