Stronger Demand for Virtual Bank Talent

With a total of eight virtual banking licenses issued by the HKMA, Chair Prof Hui compared the differences between virtual and traditional banking services. In response to talent development, he said the HKUST’s Hong Kong-first interdisciplinary MSc in Fintech Program will help address the growing demand for virtual bank talent in the city.

TVB’s Financial Magazine (second part) looked into the new tax category for digital/internet related companies introduced in some countries in Europe. The TV program interviewed Associate Prof Allen HUANG, Department of Accounting. He explained why a digital tax is needed in the new digital economy and how it can be implemented. Meanwhile, Bloomberg Business Week cited his comments regarding the Japanese multinational conglomerate SoftBank’s accounting treatment for its investments in unicorns.

Markets Inside, The Motley Fool and MReport featured a joint study conducted by Assistant Prof David DANIELS, Department of Management, together with researchers from other universities. The study examines the significant positive correlation between share price and gender diversity.

The Future of the “Chief Data Officer” (Sept 15)
The Edge Markets carried a column article on data economy, citing HKUST as one of the institutes involved in setting the Data Analytics Raising Employment (DARE) framework. Prof TAM Kar Yan, Dean of HKUST Business School, said the DARE framework provides a platform for governments, academia and business across APEC economies to discuss human capital development in data science and analytics.
How Executives Get Taught in HK (Sept 15)
The Economist (subscription needed) and Gooruf carried articles comparing MBA programs offered by western universities and their Asian counterparts – in which HKUST and HKU’s programs were featured as two examples. Associate Dean Prof Steven DEKREY said HKUST used more family business as case studies, as the classic case studies of large Western corporations developed by American business schools are less pertinent in the Asian context. He also mentioned the ground-breaking of the new HKUST campus in GZ.
