Launch of HKUST-APRU Report to Examine the Future of Work (Mar 12)
A number of local newspapers and some technology magazines reported on the launch of a report jointly developed by HKUST and APRU to examine the impacts of technology on the future of work in the Asia-Pacific Region. Local dailies including , Sing Tao Daily, Oriental Daily, Wen Wei Po, Ta Kung Po, HK Commercial Daily, HK01, and online media including eZone, Tencent and Super Media, reported on this joint project. They mentioned the project represents a collaborative effort between scholars from seven universities in the region. Prof TAM Kar Yan, Project Lead and Dean of HKUST Business School, was quoted as saying that in preparing for the future workforce, STEM/STEAM education and IT talent development need to be stepped up in the city. Some papers reported that the job types that are repetitive would likely be displaced in the near future, whereas other jobs that need creativity would stay. Meanwhile, Prof Tam wrote an article in Hong Kong Economic Journal (解牛集) calling for more effort in retraining to equip the workforce with new skills required in the market.

Opening of Karen Lee Student Mentoring Center (Mar 18)
Two local dailies, Sing Tao Daily and Wen Wei Po reported on the official opening of the Karen Lee Student Mentoring Center with support from the Dr Karen Lee Memorial Fund. Prof Emily NASON, Founding Director of the Center, said the new Center extends Dr Lee’s devotion to student mentoring and leadership development, while mentoring activities offer practical advising services and support for students. At the ceremony, three students were presented with the “Excellence in Student Mentoring Awards”, and they talked about the benefits of different mentoring activities.

QFIN Student Featured in HKEJ (Mar 27)
Hong Kong Economic Journal carried a full-page report featuring an HKUST Quantitative Finance (QFIN) student David So. As a year-one QFIN student, David talked about his interests in mathematics and finance as well as his experience in joining a student-led initiative Traders at HKUST which helps groom students who seek to enter the finance industry. Meanwhile, Senior Lecturer Prof Ekkachai SAENYASIRI , Department of Finance, shared his experiences on how peer support is crucial to students’ development and studies.

In a report by the Financial Times, Associate Prof Veronique LAFON-VINAIS, Department of Finance, shared her views on the HNA debt, saying that the government will not let HNA go completely bust.

Impact of Digital Disruption on Business (Mar 27)
SCMP carried a feature story on the effects of technology on society amid the Hong Kong Internet Economy Summit to be held in mid-April. Deputy Head of ISOM and Chair Prof HUI Kai Lung commented on business digitalization, saying the newly-introduced “Faster Payment System” by HKMA is an example of technology connecting enterprises and transformation of service model that will greatly benefit customer experience.

Russian Business Schools Seek a Global Perspective (Mar 25)
Financial Times reported on the eagerness among business schools in Russia to expand internationally. The article interviewed students and senior administrators of well-known schools in the country, including Marat Atnashev, Dean of Skolkovo. He was quoted as saying that Skolkovo is seeking accreditation and starting to build a permanent faculty with professors hired form foreign business schools. The article also mentioned the School has forged links with HKUST and launched an executive MBA focused on China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Deloitte China’s Inaugural Best Managed Companies (Mar 21)
A number of mainland media portals reported that Deloitte has announced the winners of the 23 Best Managed Companies in its inaugural BMC Program in China earlier. As the program strategic academic partner, Dean of HKUST Business School Prof TAM Kar Yan said Chinese private enterprises have made far-reaching contributions to the economic and societal development on the Mainland, and that the BMC Program has not only recognized some of the best managed companies, but also helped promote best management practices in China.
