Coverage from KH 20th Anniversary Management Conference

Majority of local electronic and print media reported on comments made by the speakers at the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA 20th anniversary Management Conference. The event with a theme on “Trump Economics and the US-Trade Imbalance” featured keynote speaker Professor Justin Lin, Dean of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University and former Chief Economist of the World Bank, and moderator Professor KC Chan, Adjunct Professor of the School. Both met the press after the panel. They offered insights into the highly controversial topic on a day after the US started imposing the first wave of tariff in Chinese goods. The media also cited remarks made by Mrs Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of HKSAR, as the guest of honor of the conference, on the impact of the trade war on Hong Kong. Over 30 media reports generated, including front-page coverage in , full-page in Apple Finance, and prominent coverage in Sing Tao Daily and Ming Pao’s Money Monday. One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition in Beijing

A number of mainland news portals, including 凤凰网, 搜狐网, 网易网, 新浪网, among others, reported on the successful completion of the One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition in Beijing. Extended to Beijing for its third time, the competition in Beijing focused on AI and robotics this year and attracted teams from more than 30 universities worldwide to Beijing. Six teams, with their innovative ideas, each took home RMB300K and also a ticket to the final HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition to be held in September.

UG Programs Featured in Metro Radio

Metro Radio’s Program Education Plus (世界大學堂) interviewed students of Global Business (GBUS) and Quantitative Finance (QFIN) from the School. The students talked about their enriching learning activities and positive experiences, among others. Edited into first, second and third episode, the interview is presented on Metro Facebook platform. Meanwhile, the Radio interviewed Professor Emily Nason, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Student Affairs), which was aired in July- Part I and Part 2.

Deloitte’s “Best Managed Companies” Project Launched in China

A number of mainland media reported on the Deloitte’s “Best Managed Companies” Project launched in China for the first time. HKUST Business School is an academic partner of the project, and Dean Professor Tam Kar Yan was cited, the School as a member of the judging panel will harness its knowledge and expertise to assess all qualified candidates, with a view to advancing the standards and quality of management in the region.

CEO and Delay of Bad News Disclosure (31 Jul)

He said that a lot of companies have returned to the basic functions of the Blockchain technology and focus on the value it brings. Meanwhile, Breakazine (突破) looked into Blockchain and the concept of ICO (Initial Coin Offerings), in which Professor Hui offered his views and compared the dot.com bubble in the late 90s.

Book on Current Affairs (22 Jul)

HK Commercial Daily and Ta Kung Pao reported that Emeritus Professor Francis Lui, Department of Economics, co-authored a book featuring his previous commentaries on current affairs. Separately, he commented on the government’s proposed ban on the operation of the HK National Party.

Contrasting EU-Japan Trade Deal with Sino-US Trade War (20 Jul)

BBC Chinese carried a comment of Professor David Cook, Department of Economics, on his views towards the latest EU-Japan trade deal. He said that the free trade agreement (FTA) is the largest in terms of being the bilateral FTA between the largest economies. However, it can be a double edged sword bilateral trade agreements, which can improve trade but they don’t support the development of global value chains.

HKEJ, Sky Post and Headline carried articles by Emeritus Professor Emeritus Francis Lui, Department of Economics, on the relationship between democratization and economic inequality, social friction in HK, and US foreign policy respectively.

Comment on Land Supply (18 Jul)

HKET carried response by Emeritus Professor Francis Lui, Department of Economics, who is also a member of the Task Force on Land Supply. He commented on the rumor on “half and half” distribution rate of public and private housing under the public-private partnership. He said “half and half” was only one group`s suggestion but not the consensus of the Task Force.
