UG & PG Programs featured in education supplements
SCMP published the “Professional Guide” featuring popular post-graduate programs offered in Hong Kong, including the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA and HKUST MBA programs. Dean Prof Tam Kar Yan was quoted as saying that the Kellogg-HKUST EMBA offers a rigorous and innovative curriculum providing a unique learning experience for participants, while MBA Program Director Prof Chen Tai Yuan said the School’s MBA curriculum reflects an increase in the offering of technology disruptive-focused courses. SCMP also published another special report in “Young Post”, featuring UG programs including BSc in Quantitative Finance offered by HKUST, in which Prof Ekkachai Saenyasiri talked about the focuses of the program and its admission requirements. MBA graduate Alvin Wong and current Quantitative Finance student Mars Luk shared their enriching learning experiences from the featured programs. Meanwhile, a supplement by the Standard recapped the portfolio of the dual-degree master’s programs (M2M) jointly offered by HKUST, Yale and HEC Paris.

Adjunct Professor KC Chan, Department of Finance, called on Hong Kong to capitalize the huge potential of the mainland market and develop more FinTech talent to enhance its competitiveness.
The unexpected shortcoming of Trump’s tax cuts (19 Dec)
HKEJ carried a commentary (解牛集) by Prof Allen Huang, Department of Accounting, on the problems of the tax reduction policy introduced by the US President Donald Trump. He said although the tax cut may encourage US economic growth, it also undermined its attractiveness in higher education and its resources on talent training, which is a concern over the nation’s long term development.
Financial Times – “The best thing I read all year” (15 Dec)
Prof Jaideep Sengupta, Department of Marketing, is one of the professors who made recommendation on Financial Times “The best thing I read in the Year”. He recommended a book “Before You Know It: The Unconscious Reasons We Do What We Do” by John Bargh. The book is related to consumer psychology, which is one with profound implications for anyone in the business of influencing others, according to Prof Sengupta.

The implication on Environment and Economy of high-speed rail in China (12 Dec)
HKEJ carried a commentary (解牛集) by Assistant Prof Guojun He, Department of Economics. He said that the high-speed rail network had different economic and environmental impact on various cities. Cities with lower income (but cleaner environment) usually opt for a less environmental-friendly way in an attempt to drive economic growth.

Family Business (24 Nov)
Citywire zoomed in on family business succession in China. The articles quoted by Prof Roger King, Director of Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies, as saying that for businesses that will pass the mantle to the younger generation, ownership pruning and diversification are key. The article also cited a study by the Center that finds successful businesses that have survived three generations usually prune the ownership down to a single entity or individual and simplify the ownership structure.
