Co-organized by the Center for Business and Social Analytics (CBSA) at the School of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School) and Wisers Information Limited (Wisers), the Analytics Challenge @HKUST has returned this year to promote data analytics skills in risk management among tertiary students. Celebrating its third edition this year and sponsored by Wisers, the contest has attracted the participation of over 40 teams, comprising more than 120 full-time students from universities in Hong Kong, who vied to develop innovative data analytics solutions in the field of risk management. Following a two-month research undertaking, the team comprising students from HKUST and City University of Hong Kong has emerged as the champion.

At the final round contest, the five finalist teams presented their proposals to a panel of judges comprising industry experts from Wisers, HKUST, HSBC, BOA International Financial Group, and AIVI Technologies. Examining the predictive ability of news sentiment on future stock prices, building a scam monitoring system for risk management, and creating a visual representation of potential political risks, were among the projects of the finalist teams. A total cash prize of HK$30,000 was awarded to the three winning teams.

The contest challenged the participants to come up with predictive models or innovative proposals for risk management problems that involved mining a massive dataset consisting of over 1.2 million news articles, social media posts, and comments. Through an educational webinar series featuring leading experts in the field, the competition has also provided the contestants with critical context and insights.

Prof. Kai-Lung HUI, Director of CBSA and Acting Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics, and Operations Management, HKUST Business School, said, “We are delighted to join hands with Wisers in organizing this contest to inspire skill development in data analytics. Through their creative proposals, the contesting teams have demonstrated remarkable ability to connect data analytics to real-world applications, while showing the power of data analytics in driving innovative solutions in risk management.”

Ms. Denise CHE, Chief Executive Officer of Wisers, said, “Partnering with HKUST for the Analytics Challenge has been a fantastic initiative, not only in terms of advancing impactful social and business solutions, but also in nurturing and identifying exceptional talent. We have been impressed by the students' analytical skills, enthusiasm, and their ability to work in teams, which are essential qualities for future leaders.
