The "HKUST Forum on the Future Development of Hong Kong", Session 3 -- The Government's Role in the Economy, was held on July 12, 2002 (Friday) at the Island Shangri-la Hotel. The Session drew approximately 200 registrants including policy decision makers, senior executives, economists, scholars, as well as members of the HKUST community. It also attracted widespread attention in the media.

The Session featured prominent speakers including Prof Edward Chen, President, Lingnan University; Prof Michael Enright, Professor of Business Administration, University of Hong Kong; Ms Christine Loh, CEO, Civic Exchange; and Mr Wilfred Wong, Vice-Chairman, Shui On Holdings. Prof Leonard Cheng, Head of Economics, HKUST, joined the speakers at the Panel Discussion moderated by Prof Francis Lui, Professor of Economics, HKUST. Dr John Cho-chak Chan, HKUST Council Chairman and KMB Managing Director, was the speaker at the luncheon.

The HKUST Forum was organized by the University as part of its mission to propel Hong Kong's economic and social development. The Forum was divided into three sessions running from May to July. The first and second sessions were "Positioning Hong Kong: Pearl River Delta and Beyond" and "Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Hong Kong" respectively.
