When Global Business and Economics alumna Gillian DEL MUNDO returned to Hong Kong after an overseas exchange in 2020, a lack of female-led initiatives on campus inspired her to launch Women in Business (WIB). Created with a group of business students, WIB aims to empower young women to approach the business world with confidence and fortitude.

The Project Leadership Program is WIB’s signature initiative. Organized with the Hong Kong Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Association and funded by HKUST’s Entrepreneurship Center, the program helps students develop their businesses or non-profit projects by offering mentorships with successful female professionals for one semester. Last year, the program received encouraging responses and gathered 16 mentors and up to 25 student mentees.

Most recently, WIB had also participated in the Women Leaders Conference Week and collaborated with university groups from Singapore, Indonesia, and other countries in the region. The conference featured illustrious speakers from HSBC, Twitch, Stripe, Procter & Gamble, Deloitte, and other global organizations.

Although launching WIB during the pandemic was challenging, Celine HUSADA – a year-four student from Indonesia studying Information Systems and Marketing and current president of WIB – reflected that opportunities were also presented. This includes connecting with similar overseas university groups at the University of California at Berkeley and global other universities through online events.

Coming up next, WIB will expand its partnership network by collaborating with internal HKUST groups and external companies and social organizations. WIB will expand its pioneering work to provide a vital connection between aspiring and veteran businesswomen.
