Earlier this month, the Fintechstic 2021 Case Competition was successfully held as a closing event for this year’s Fintechstic event series.

Fintechstic 2021 was jointly organized by the HKUST Fintech Research Project and AQUMON and supported by InvestHK. Through a series of online and physical activities spanning 1.5 months from September to November, over 400 public and student participants from all local universities gathered to learn about robo-advisors and related technologies.

Throughout the competition, both Champion and Runner-up teams, Well and 4K, were formed by students from HKUST and CUHK. Students were delighted with the learning process throughout the competition as well as their newfound friendships.

"I’m from South Korea, and I have made some new friends during the competition. The experience was really meaningful to me," said Yeowon CHO, a Year 3 student majoring in BSc in Global China Studies at HKUST.

"Joining this competition was a new experience for us as we are only Year 1 students. This competition has brought us new friends from other universities,” said Thomas HEUN, currently studying BBA in Global Business at HKUST.

Heun and his teammates – Wai Hang LAU (Year 1, Integrated BBA, CUHK), Shing Chung CHAN (Year 1, BBA in Global Business, HKUST), and Jia Yan TIAN (Year 1, BEng in Financial Technology, HKUST) – had only met through online meetings until the final round, where they met in person for the first time to give a live presentation in front of the judges. “This is my first time visiting the HKUST campus and participating in a case competition,” said Lau. “The special memories today will become treasured memories forever," he added.

The competition brought together close to 150 students from five local universities with extremely high-quality proposals to impress the judges. Additionally, all participants are set to become a strong force for the fintech industry.

"I am passionate about fintech, and I want to develop my career in this field. This competition has allowed me to learn more about fintech and new technologies,” said Jeffy TSE, a final year student studying in HKUST’s BBA in Operations Management program.

"I am new to fintech, but I am fascinated by this competition and the new knowledge I learned," said Julie XU, a Year 3 HKUST student majoring in Economics.
