Kellogg-HKUST EMBA – Learn with High Impact, Low Ego Peers

featured the Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA (EMBA) program, which has been ranked world’s No.1 for eight times by the Financial Times. Its Program Director Judy Au in an interview highlighted the value of mutual learning, exchange of ideas and a global network brought about by a group of high-caliber students. She advised applicants, in addition to meeting the basic requirements, should show a positive attitude to share and learn from each other. To meet a thirst for technology knowledge, the program will introduce new courses such as big data analytics and start-up. The story also introduced several alumni of the program including Ken Romaniszyn, President of Lady M; Carrina Chan, Managing Director of Saint Honore Cake Shop; and Adriel Chan, Executive Director of Hang Lung Group.

Faculty Offer Insights into Global Issues

NOW TV Finance (大鳴大放) interviewed Adjunct Prof KC Chan, Department of Finance, to discuss US-China trade war and the development of FinTech in Hong Kong. Prof Chan expected an ongoing volatile market, as a result of the US-China trade dispute fueled by outspoken comments made by Trump. Meanwhile, RTHK3 Radio Program Backchat discussed Facebook and online privacy issue amid its founder Mark Zuckerberg apologized for the huge privacy breach. Prof Hui Kai Lung, Chair Professor, Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management, and former Legislator Sin Chung Kai, joined the program and shared their views on the issue. Prof Hui reminded users to be vigilant on the information provided to service providers and protecting their own data.

Assessing Family Business Future-Readiness in South and South-east Asia (26 Apr)

A new study and survey by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) assesses the readiness of family business across Asia-Pacific to address future challenges to their operations. The report obtained insights from interviews with experts in the field, including Prof Roger King, Director of the Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies. Prof King pointed out that the new generation will manage their companies very differently, with having more structure and being technology-driven to stay abreast of trends such as AI and globalization. Commenting on succession plan, Prof King said Chinese tradition implies that the first-born son is the successor by default, and thus a succession plan is not necessarily in a written form.

Positive Bubbles of ICO (24 Apr)

HKEJ carried a commentary (解牛集) by Prof Allen Huang, Department of Accounting, on the bubbles of Initial Coin Offering (ICO). He talked about some of the positive impacts of ICO, and pointed out that since current ICO encourages speculative activities, it is imperative to regulate.

Commentary on US-China Trade War (24 Apr)

BBC Chinese carried a comment by Prof Albert Park, Department of Economics and Director of Institute of Emerging Market Studies, on his views on US-China trade war. He said the economic development of a country was motivated by the innovation and technology. Similarly, SCMP carried Prof Edwin Lai’s views on the same topic. He said that it is a unilateral protectionist action by the US and not yet a trade war. He also pointed out that one foreseeable result of the current tension is to make China even more determined to press ahead with the Belt and Road Initiative, opening up next export markets for outbound direct investment.

Several media, including Ming Pao, Wen Wei Po and Finet, carried a comment by Adjunct Prof KC Chan, Department of Finance, on his views towards US-China trade war and the underlying impacts on Hong Kong’s capital markets.

President Xi’s Anti-Corruption Affected Wealth Transfer (17 Apr)

Citywire wrote about President Xi’s anti-corruption campaign on wealth transfer. The article quoted Prof Roger King, Director of Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies, as saying that it is not easy for social capital to pass on to the next generation even in the best of times. The article also said since the human network is not viable anymore, so both first and next generation are looking to build new networks, which is also why the first generation will continue to carry their baton even though they are growing old, worrying that the next generation will not be able to take over.

Initial Coin Offering (ICO) and the “Market for Lemons” (17 Apr)

HKEJ carried a commentary (解牛集) by Prof Allen Huang, Department of Accounting, on Initial Coin Offering (ICO). He elaborated on the nature and mechanism of ICO and pointed out that some of the disadvantages of current ICO activities are comparable to the used car market in the US, which is also known as the “Market for Lemons”, that eventually collapsed given the inefficiency and lack of trust.

Cable TV Looks into Cross-Border Opportunities (15 Apr)

Cable TV Program “Sunday 有理講” interviewed MBA alumnus Andrew Leung and other speakers to discuss opportunities and prospects for Hong Kong people in mainland China. Andrew had over 10 years of experience in luxury and marketing sector and was relocated to different parts of China during his time with luxury brand Cartier.

Prof Park said that the announced policies aligned with China’s reform direction and had strategically responded to US’s core complain through loosening restrictions on foreign investment such as the automobile industry.
