Join us for a fireside chat with Mr. Charles LI, Founder and Chairman of Micro Connect, and Former Chief Executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX), on how China’s cashless and highly digitalized payment infrastructure has supported new ways to develop new financing models in order to better serve the real economy. Mr. Li will also talk about his latest endeavor in leveraging digital innovation to connect global capital with China’s micro and small businesses, with a view to delivering positive impact to the grassroots economy.

Charles is Founder and Chairman of Micro Connect. He was most recently Chief Executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) from January 2010 to December 2020. During this time, he orchestrated some of the most significant strategic initiatives in HKEX’s history, including the acquisition of the London Metal Exchange in 2012, the launch of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect cross-border trading scheme in 2014, Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect in 2016, Bond Connect in 2017, and the Listing Reforms in 2018. Prior to joining HKEX in 2009, Charles served as Chairman of JP Morgan China from 2003 to 2009 and worked at Merrill Lynch from 1994 to 2003, where he served as President of Merrill Lynch China from 1999 to 2003. Earlier in his career, Charles practiced law at Brown & Wood and Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York.

Charles also serves on the Board of MarketAxess Holdings Inc. and the Board of Trustees of Asia Business Council.

Charles received a BA in English Literature from Xiamen University, an MA in Journalism from the University of Alabama and a JD from Columbia Law School.

Professor Wei SHYY

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

Prof. SHYY is the President of HKUST since 1 September 2018. He first joined HKUST in August 2010 as Provost and Chair Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Prior to joining HKUST, Prof. SHYY was Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson Collegiate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the University of Michigan.

As an academic leader, Prof. SHYY has consistently advocated broadening educational scope and approach, advancing research and knowledge transfer to help address global challenges. He is committed to promoting university’s societal engagement and independent, entrepreneurial spirit. He has also led efforts in fostering diverse and inclusive campus cultures to better reflect and support the university’s overall mission.

Prof. SHYY obtained his MSE and PhD degrees in Aerospace Engineering from University of Michigan. He has supervised and hosted many PhD students as well as postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars.
