Beijing One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition Launched

More than 20 mainland news portals reported on the launch of the HKUST One Million Dollar Entrepreneurship Competition in Beijing. They said the competition has extended from Hong Kong to four other cities since last year, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Macau. With an aim to promoting entrepreneurship, the competition in Beijing is now open for application, and its regional final contest is scheduled on 1 July. Finalists in the city may share as much as one million yuan if they are selected by a voting committee. The top three winners of each city will compete in the Grand Final to be held at HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute in Nansha in August. The Dangerous Side of ETFs

USA Today (1 Feb) featured a paper on ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) - co-authored by Professor Utpal Bhattacharya, Department of Finance. His study “Abusing ETFs” finds investors who own ETFs have performed worse, on average, than those who have avoided them. To show that ETFs were the cause of this reduced return, the study analyzed the transactions undertaken over a five-year period by nearly 8,000 clients of a German on-line brokerage firm. Meanwhile, IGNITES, fund management news from Financial Times (10 Feb), also featured the study.

Comparing the Jewish Diaspora and Overseas Chinese

Jewish Times Asia reported on a talk conducted by Tel Aviv University at the Jewish Community Centre. Guest speakers of the event included Professor Roger King, the Founder and Director of the Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies. He explained and compared many similarities between the overseas Chinese and the Jewish Diasporas. Link

Sing Tao carried a supplement on postgraduate education and looked into different popular programs in Hong Kong. Dean Professor Kar Yan Tam commented on the skills required for Fintech talent, including cross-disciplinary knowledge on business and information technology as well as strong analytical skill. He also suggested the value of equipping oneself by taking MBA courses.

Sky Post reported on a venture Origami LABS, with its product - an audio wireless communication device – to be launched in May. The startup is setup by three HKUST MBA alumni. Link

Nurturing High School Students to be Entrepreneurs (8 Feb)

Sky Post reported that HKUST GBUS students who have provided voluntary coaching to students from secondary schools for the Young Innovators Bazaar. The bazaar has been organized for the past five years by Project WeCan, a Business-in-Community initiative to empower secondary school students who are disadvantaged in learning. GBUS Program Director Professor Emily Nason was quoted as saying that the Young Innovators Bazaar has provided an idea platform for students to put their knowledge into real-life practice. Link
