Dean Shares Insights with Mainland Media
Mainland newspaper (科技日報) carried an interview with Dean Kar Yan Tam and Associate Dean Xu Yan. They talked about the “Can-Do” spirit at HKUST that helps build a culture of innovation on campus, and also explained the value of diversity of student and faculty mix and internationalization to develop an international business school. Meanwhile, news portal The Paper (澎湃新聞) reported on comments made by Dean Tam on big data and artificial intelligence and their revolutionary impacts could have brought to business and the way we live in the future. The two stories were reposted on a number of mainland news portals includingedu.china.com, 網易, 漢豐網, 東方頭條, among others.
JUPAS Supplement and Radio Program
Ming Pao special supplement, JUPAS Guide, featured the UG programs offered by the School. It interviewed two GBUS students, who shared their international exposure and exchange opportunities, and tips to admission interviews. Meanwhile, RTHK Channel 5 program (奮發時刻) featured HKUST and interviewed a student and faculty, including Professor Emily Nason, in which she introduced key features of the UG programs, including its flexible curriculum, corporate projects and admission requirements. HKUST Featured on ViuTV
ViuTV continued featuring HKUST on its three-episode series “University Secrets”. Following the first episode on Schools of Business and Science, the second and third episodes featured programs offered by the Schools of Engineering and Humanities, together with sharing by students and alumni of different Schools. Current business student Mohamed Thalha talked about his U-life and the three most important things he discovered at HKUST (second episode at 20’26”), while Carrie Tang, an accounting graduate, talked about how she won an entrepreneurship competition at HKUST and her exchange experience.(third episode at 19’45”).

Debt-to-Equity to Resolve Mainland Debt Crisis (22 Nov)
Hong Kong Economic Journal carried a commentary (解牛集) by Senior Associate Dean and Chair Professor Prof Jiatao Li, Department of Management. Professor Li shared his views on China’s “debt-for-equity” swap, which could be a way to avoid a debt crisis in the country. Link
Commentary on Political and Economic Issues
Professor Francis Lui, Director of Center for Economic Development, shared his views on several topical issues on multiple platforms. He discussed the impact of HK’s judicial system as a result of Beijing’s interpretation of Article 104 in Yazhou Zhoukan and HKEJ, the Legco swearing-in dispute in his column in Sky Post, and local economic performance on Commercial Radio. Meanwhile, a number of local dailies reported on the Chief Executive Election Committee subsector election for the higher education sector, including a group led by Professor Lui and other scholars announced their candidacy. Several faculty of the School offered their comments on the US presidential election result and its impacts on the global and US economy, Sino-US trade relation, foreign policy, etc. They included comments made by Professor Francis Lui on its column in Sky Post, Professor Edward Lai in HK01, Professor Jeremy Yen on RTHK Radio, and Professor Li Xi in Wall Street Journal (China Edition).
How Pride Influences the Desire for Uniqueness (9 Nov)
SCMP Education Post published a research summary by Professor Anirban Mukhopadhyay, Department of Marketing. His research examines whether and how “pride” can affect consumers’ uniqueness seeking, and advances the understanding of the mechanisms by which incidental pride can influence the tendency for unique products.
