Faculty Receive Recognition by Government (30 Jun)
Two faculty members from the Business School are awarded by the HKSAR Government Honors List this year. Emeritus Professor Francs Lui is awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) for his distinguished academic achievements in the fields of economics and finance as well as his dedicated public service. Dean Professor Tam Kar Yan is awarded the Medal of Honor (MH) for his dedicated public and community service, including his contributions to the implementation of the New Academic Structure, as cited by Ta Kung Pao.
Seminar Highlights Vietnam’s Contribution to OBOR (7 Jun)
SCMP carried a sponsored article featuring the first of a seminar series co-organized by the Business School and the United Overseas Bank (UOB). The first seminar held in May examined Vietnam’s participation in the One Belt, One Road initiative, where speakers including industry experts and our faculty shared views and tips on tapping into the new market. Other two seminars that reviewed opportunities in Myanmar and Indonesia were held in June.

Family Business Succession
Bloomberg Businessweek(Chinese Edition) carried an interview with Professor Roger King, Director of the Tanoto Center for Asian Family Business and Entrepreneurship Studies, on family business. Professor King talked about the common features among Chinese family businesses and explained the importance of “3Ps” – Wealth Preservation, Harmony Preservation, and Value and Legacy System Preservation – in family business succession.
RMB Internationalization and Mainland Financial Reform (27 Jun)
HKEJ carried a commentary (解牛集) by Professor Edwin Lai, Department of Economics. Professor Lai looked at the role of “One Belt One Road”, which he said not only helps drive the RMB internationalization, but also provide an impetus to the mainland financial market reform.
Commentary on Russia’s Development (23 Jun)
Sky Post carried an article by Emeritus Professor Francis Lui, Department Economics. Professor Lui compared the development progress of Russian, mainland and Hong Kong in his recent trip to Russia, and commented on the impacts of “shock therapy” on Russian economy.
About Economy Recovery (22 June)
Sina Finance News reported on a forum held by the Center for China in the World Economy of Tsinghua University, where Emeritus Professor Francis Lui was quoted as saying that the world economy showed no sign of a full recovery, notwithstanding some improvement in Europe.
Significance of One Belt One Road (22 Jun)
HK Commercial Daily zoomed in on the long-term positive impacts of the “One Belt One Road” initiative. The story interviewed different people including Professor Xie Danyang, Department of Economics. He was quoted as saying that the initiative is a step taken by China against trade protectionism, with far-reaching implications.
Effects of China Tax Reform (20 Jun)
HKEJ carried a commentary (解牛集) by Lecturer Dr Kelvin Mak, Department of Accounting. Dr Mak explained the underlying risks of global tax reforms, especially amid the US President Donald Trump’s tax cut plan, which he pointed out may fuel the global tax competition as countries are taking steps to attract foreign investment.
RMB Internationalization (20 Jun)
SCMP carried a story looking at the future of the RMB, while China pushes forward with its global trade and economic initiative. Professor Edwin Lai, Department of Economics, was quoted as saying that there is a long way to go before the renminbi can be fully internationalized, but added that the renminbi will come back in favor in a couple of years, when the Chinese economy gets stronger.
MSGF Program Profiled in FT (19 June)
Financial Times featured the HKUST-NYU Stern MS in Global Finance program. An alumnus Charmaine Cheuk, a real estate investment executive, talked about the valuable lessons she took after she joined the course in 2007. Co-academic Director at NUY Stern, Professor Menachem Brenner, pointed out that the variety of study locations and the opportunity to travel increases the program’s appeal, while Professor Kasper Meisner Nielsen, Co-academic Director at HKUST, introduced two courses - FinTech and Behavioral Finance – which have been added to the program as a reflection of the constant flux in the financial world.
Former SBM Dean Plans to Return to HKUST (19 Jun)
RTHK interviewed Professor KC Chan, former Dean of the School. Professor Chan said he is likely to return to HKUST after stepping down as Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury. He expressed interest in FinTech. When commenting on the local economy, he reminded Hongkongers of the growing risk in the property market. His remarks were widely reported by local media.
Income Gap in Hong Kong (16 Jun)
Sky Post carried an article by Emeritus Professor Francis Lui, Department of Economics. Professor Lui discussed the income gap among Hongkongers, flagging up the importance of purchasing power, the property price and the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the job market.
FinTech Forum (15 Jun)
Ming Pao reported on a FinTech forum co-organized by the Bank of China in Hong Kong, where speakers’ comments were quoted. Dean of the School Professor Tam Kar Yan said that the major challenge of HK in developing Fintech is talent shortage, suggesting a large-scale project that can help the city to attract international talent.

SCMP Education Post carried a research summary by Assistant Professor Kim Jun, Department of Marketing. His study looks into the impacts of news media channels in the wake of digitization, with which marketers and advertisers can decide how to allocate their advertising budget between different channels.
Telemarketing Regulation (13 Jun)
HKEJcarried a commentary (解牛集) by Professor Hui Kai Lung, Department of ISOM. Professor Hui discussed steps put forward by the Government on regulating person-to-person telemarketing calls. He denied the three solutions proposed by the Government and suggested that a registration system for the telemarketing operators is a more preferable option.
