At times, things may seem chaotic and uncertain, but that also offers plenty of opportunities for those prepared to take them. “As a leader, you need to have a longer term vision as to exactly where your organization should be and where you want to be, and then develop the strategies or build up the resources to achieve that goal,” he says. “Your planning must be flexible, so you can adapt to each new situation.” That philosophy has guided HKUST through both turbulent and transformative times, reinforcing its reputation as an agile, forward thinking institution. Lifelong Learning and Leadership Dr. Lo firmly believes that education is not confined to the classroom and should be seen as a lifelong pursuit. It is also essential to give students a broader vision, so that they can develop their own perspectives on what is happening and why in today’s fast-paced world. He also champions professional management and accountability, values that mirror his experience as a business leader. “You should have KPIs (key performance indicators), a proper organization and structure in a business or university. In that way, everyone knows what is expected of them,” he says. The result is clarity, transparency, and a meritocracy which rewards those who do well and lets other know they need to improve.
