The Fintech Talent Development, Competency, and Manpower Study 49 Sources of Fintech Professionals Role of Hong Kong Universities in Supplying Fintech Talent To meet the growing needs for fintech professionals in the market and to bridge the talent gap in the industry, local universities in Hong Kong are keen to nurture skilled professionals and entrepreneurs who are technologically adept and business savvy. As of 2020, seven local universities in Hong Kong have rolled out bachelor’s or master’s degree programs related to fintech or offered a fintech stream in their programs. There are altogether ten bachelor’s and master’s degree programs related to fintech as follows: Bachelor’s degree programs in Hong Kong related to fintech: • Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) in Financial Technology (HKU) • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Financial Technology (CUHK) • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computational Finance and Financial Technology (CityU) • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Financial Technology and Artificial Intelligence (PolyU) • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Financial Technology (Top-up degree) (PolyU) • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Financial Technology and Innovation (OUHK) Master’s degree programs in Hong Kong related to fintech: • Master of Finance (MFin) – Financial Technology Stream (HKU) • Master of Science (MSc) in Financial Technology (CUHK) • Master of Science (MSc) in Financial Technology (HKUST) • Master of Science (MSc) in Finance (Fintech and Financial Analytics) (HKBU) According to the intake of different programs, it is expected that around 150 fintech degree graduates possessing the skill sets required will enter the market as early as in the summer of 2020. The number will grow steadily in the coming five years. By 2024, there will be more than 1,600 fintech degree graduates joining this fast paced and dynamic industry.
